LIEBERMAN BARACKED INTO CORNER
NY Post ^ | June 6, 2008 | GEOFF EARLE

WASHINGTON - An emboldened Barack Obama browbeat Sen. Joe Lieberman on the Senate floor after the self-proclaimed "Independent Democrat" slammed the candidate on behalf of Republican John McCain.

Flexing his new power as the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, Obama greeted Lieberman, a prominent McCain backer, on the Senate floor Wednesday - then promptly led him by the hand to a back corner to give him a talking-to.

"He had him pinned against the wall," said one Senate aide who saw the tete-a-tete...

Those who don't know it should familiarize yourselves with this word:

mau-mau (moumou) tr.v. mau·maued, mau·mau·ing, mau·maus Informal

To attack or denounce vociferously, especially so as to intimidate: "In years past, [the civil rights leadership] ... would mau-mau the government or the corporate sector or the white community" Joseph Perkins.

[After the Mau Mau, a secret society of Kikuyu terrorists that led a rebellion against the ruling Europeans in Kenya in the 1950s, from Kikuyu mau-mau, sound of the voracious gobbling of a hyena.]

I was being pretty broad about what that “thing” is that would help McCain beat Obama. The thing is that he appeals to independents. Of course, that entails that he drifts leftward but not so leftward as Barack. I think we can reason with McCain on some issues like judges, terrorism and nuclear energy at least. I really don't think McCain would ever give us a Ginsberg in today's political climate. Obama would be uncontrollable in every way.

He’s just a typical street punk from the south side of Chicago.

Actually, that would be better than what he really is. It would at least be honest. Instead he's *pretending* to by a typical street punk from the South Side of Chicago. In reality he's a confused kid, born in Hawai to the second wife of an African Muslim and a crazy Howeli girl from Kansas, raised in part by an Indonesian Muslim, and mostly by Anglo (literally) grandparents in Hawaii, then sent to those eastern liberal bastion of Columbia for "finishing" and later Harvard Law School. In between Havard and Columbia was when he first saw the South Side of Chicago, as a "organizer" at a "public interest" organization. After Harvard law, he returned to the South Side. But he never actually lived the life of a "street punk", he just picked up their morals and world outlook by osmosis.

talking about "whompin" members of Congress with a stick

Gee, the first thing he's said that makes me empathize with him. I've wanted to do that more than once myself. :)

Making contact can make it battery in NY, at least back in the late 80s when I took the class in school. Making a threat constituted assault.

I think he was referring specifically to Republican members of Congress, especially the conservative ones.

Yes, I've heard the same from yellow dog democrat friends of mine. There's also this:

Other websites have sprung up to denounce Democrats for picking Obama. One - called PUMA, an acronym for the sentiment “Party Unity My Ass” - features postings by Clinton supporters saying they will never vote for Obama, even if it means electing McCain.

LOL!

You just hate cats, buddy! I know exactly what kind of person you are - you despise independenc in others. I see it all the time

Cats are not just independent, they are also arrogant. Dogs, while generally less independent (being pack animals) are much more friendly. Cats put up with people, dogs love them.

People are neither cats nor dogs. While we can live solitary or just "single family" lives, we do better in social groups.

Our biggest problems, in many areas, are because we are neither this nor that, but some of each. We get into trouble when we try to be both..at the same time.

Of course you are correct. Not being a lawyer I always mess that one up. However, I think you'd have a hard time going with assault, when no one was armed, and there was no physical contact at all. This was on the Floor of the Senate, where they assault each other verbally on a daily basis.

But still, with the touching battery, or assault and battery, depending on how DC does that, would be the correct charge.

In his mind, perhaps, but nothing he said indicated that. He says enough outrageous things that we don't need to be putting words into his mouth. If we do, there won't be room in there for his foot.

"...Cats put up with people, dogs love them..."

Huh? My cats love me. Cats stand up for themselves, that's all. Beat a cat, and he isn't apt to come around and keep kissing your butt the way a dog does. I like dogs too, but I think you misunderstand cats, and underestimate the affection they have for the people in their lives that love them.

A lot of the plague problems that happened in Europe, happened due to the mass killing of cats by the superstitious who thought them to be agents of the devil, and of witches, which greatly increased the plague problem, seeing as how the natural enemy of the rat was being eliminted, which meant there were more rats, which carried the fleas, which carried the plague, which killed. Another shining episode in "the folly of man," really.

You don't have to like cats, but I think you're wrong regarding their "arrogance." They can be independent and still "love" at the same time, just like people. Cats are far more like people than dogs are. I'd rather be loved by a creature that chooses to love me based on mutual affection, rather than a creature that sees me as the leader of the pack which must be "loved" at all costs, in blind devotion, regardless of how I treat it.

Anyway, to get back on track: I'm not going to be thrilled voting for McCain, but I'm going to do it anyway. I'd do anything to see Obama lose this election so I can watch all the faces of his zombified supporters melt into liquid, like the nazis at the end of "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

But I do like them. I just accept them for what they are. They do the same for me, some of them anyway. Perhaps "standoffish" would have been slightly better than "arrogant". Some are arrogant of course, others are very skittish.

Beating a dog and expecting him to kiss your butt is a good way to get your butt bit. Some dogs will take that sort of thing, but far from all.

The cats I respect the most are the barn cats. They are tough cookies, and usually standoffish. If they are arrogant, well, they've earned it. Some mighty nasty rodents in and around some barns... until a bunch of cats take up residence there.

Thanks for clarifying what you meant. I agree that they can be “standoffish” at times too, but I guess I would use the word “moody.” :) All a matter of semantics, I guess.

There is no question that cats need to be “socialized” with humans within the first 12 weeks, or they will be averse to human contact forever. There is still a lot of “wildness” left in the genes of cats, as they were one of the last animals domesticated by man. Some point to this fact as evidence for a lack of intelligence or affection, while ignoring the very real possibility that maybe they were just the last holdouts to surrender to some form of dependancy on humans, but finally decided it was a good deal in the end, total freedom/independence be damned.

Didn’t mean to misunderstand you. As a man who likes cats, I get a lot of funny looks from people, as if I’m “strange” for being a cat lover, a heterosexual, AND the kicker, a conservative! Us straight, white, gun clinging Christians like cats too sometimes...

Oh yes. The “he’s one of them” thing. As much as I hate that, it may be the only way to keep the other guy out of there.

I am hoping things will turn around in 2012. Regardless of all the various prophecies regarding that year, I do not believe the world is going to end.

Maybe things will turn around. Who knows?
