On the other side, the old hands say there is nothing like a pilot in the cockpit to make decisions, evaluate, etc.

The old hands said the battleship was invincible, too.

If your guess is right, it's high time - we really can't afford to waste any more money on manned aircraft.

There are Air Force guys on the ground in Iraq, wearing ACUs (or their equivalent), in armored Humvees, pulling patrol duty in the streets.

I wonder if those that resigned are Carter and/or Clinton appointees.

Gates hit the decks running and firing and pushing the surge.

Gates appears to be a friend of McCain and vice versa.

What Gates may be doing is getting the Pentagon running how McCain and his think tanks feel it should be to win the WOT.

a small part of me hopes it was because of the stupid “over all” slogan they stole from the nazis and that some army officers were going to be asked to resign for “army strong” and “army of one” next.

Whoa. You seem to need an education. Service secretaries are political appointees in this case Wynne is by Bush and serves at his pleasure or until the administration is over.
Service Chiefs are selected by POTUS whenever there is a “need” (term expires, retirement, death, resignation)

Carter was POTUS 30 years ago and the Clinton Presidential era ended 8 years ago. Neither one was involved.

There's not much love here in the Army for the Air Force.

Even less for the Navy. Having an admiral running the wars in Afganistan and Iraq just about caused some generals' heads to explode. They finally got their guy, Petraeus, to head up CENTCOM. It took much effort to get rid of the Navy guy.

When the Navy decided to kick the signoff on reqs up a level we considered doing something similar. Our chief always questioned every part we ordered. In wasn’t unusual for a module to cost thousands. A pickup truck in those days was a rather cheap $1,500. The lieutenant who took over the signoff chores never asked a question.

Would it be too much for someone in the supply chain to wonder why a DDG needed a pickup truck?

moonbats or not - the oil traders (speculators) didn’t like the news. Oil went vertical right after the announcement.

I think its a little pre-mature to totally discount a policy disagreemnt with Iran as being the reason for the resignations. I don’t think it has anything to do with the nuke issues (loose nuke flying over the country or the nuke triggers that made there way to Taiwan) - too far removed in time. I suppose it could be either the on going fued as to the air force not contributing their fair share to the war effort or to the manned v. unmanned A/C dispute.

You’re welcome. I hope I didn’t seem terse in the writing. Sometimes the in economy of words things get harsh.

I know several Air Force officers personally serving WITH (I.E. filling in for) your army kin for at least 14 months (2 months for training) in Afghan.

All those Air Force officers/airman helping your "brethren" deserve an apology because they are pulled from their usual Air Force "job" to back up your branch. Don't equate a quote about drones and think the Air Force is enjoying themselves at your branch expense.

According to the lead editorial in this month’s Air Force Times, it has to do with the speech Gates gave on May 13 at Colorado Springs. He wants the services to concentrate on the the present War on Terror and not buy modern arms to fight potential future wars. He said, “It is hard to conceive of any country confronting the United States directly in conventional terms — ship to ship, fighter to fighter, tank to tank — for some time to come.” Apparently, the Air Force leaders said we need new aircraft to maintain air superiority, so he fired them.

When did that happen .....September of 07 ??

This has SQUAT too do with that incident. If they were going too be fired then they would have lost their jobs that same week !

The recent Operational Readiness Inspection was a regular ORI scheduled and performed same as with other bases. The only reason Why Not Minot gets their names in the press is due the infamous screw up last year.

As too everyone else kicking dirt on men and women serving in combat zones including the base dwellers launching aircraft I say kiss my ass as too who does and doesn’t do what from the safety of your keyboards.

There are USAF security forces and augmenters performing convoy escorts, Pararescuemen (PJ’s) and combat controllers CCT’s running and gunning with spec ops and sheep dipped with every other service in harms way. And do NOT even try me on my beloved EOD teams that I served 26 years in.

Total BS on this thread unrelated too the news on the plate ......bunch of piss ant REMF’s kicking dirt on active duty forces of any branch is just a damn shame !

Losers !

Had either publicly shared an opinion on bombing Iran?

As LeMay used to say, “Unfortunately, sometimes I can’t tell the difference between people that are unlucky and incompetent...I can’t afford to have either in my command.”
