Blogger Conference Calls: McCain Invites Critics From Right & Left
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

With the traditional media admitting they find it hard to curb their enthusiasm for Barack Obama, John McCain demonstrated again today that he is reaching out to the new media, giving blogging critics from the right and left the opportunity to participate in the blogger conference calls he has been regularly conducting. The Washington Times noted the phenomenon in an article of May 16, McCain widens dialogue on blogs, reporting that three of the seven questions in the May 15 conference call were posed by liberal-leaning bloggers.

Of the half-dozen or so questions McCain took in today's blogger call [in which I participated], one was from a blogger from the left. James Kirchick, a New Republic assistant editor/blogger [and National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association 2007 Journalist of the Year], quizzed McCain on his position on the proposed amendment to the California constitution limiting marriage to one man and one woman [McCain expressed support for the amendment and for the ballot initiative giving citizens the right to vote on it].

The most barbed question actually came from the right. Quin Hillyer of the Washington Examiner began by expressing "all due respect," eliciting a wry "I always like that beginning" from the senator. Hillyer went on to describe what he characterized as "one of the most frequently aired complaints from conservatives," to wit, that "when you disagree with conservatives you seem to use the anger and the language of the left, and to question not just conservative positions but motive or integrity." Hillyer asked for assurances that McCain would "avoid that tendency" if he were elected President. McCain fundamentally disagreed with the premise, stating that he treated all people with respect.

“McCain fundamentally disagreed with the premise, stating that he treated all people with respect.”

What? Now we get a new meaning for the word ‘respect’. McCain needs a dictionary...in English. He doesn’t know the meaning of amnesty either.

If the election were held today, I still could not vote for this RINO. Susan Sorandon (I'll move to Italy if McCain is elected) almost put me in the McCain camp the other day, but McCain's spokesman spewing liberal talking points re-calibrated me.

Any President who holds himself higher than his party will ruin his party. The democRATs under Bill Clinton can attest to this.

I'm far from a John McCain fan, but I have to give him points on this one. Sen. Obama, much like his disciple Keith Olbermann, seems uncomfortable with opinions that differ with his own. They only find refuge in people that parrot their own prejudices.

"Takes on"? Sounds like he "waived off" concerns from the right.

Per usual.

You mean McCain took questions from conservatives? I’m sure he was more comfortable dealing with the libs, however.

Please tell me somebody asked McCain how he could have so easily fallen for the “global warming” hoax, and whether of not his being duped by the enviro-socialists calls into question his competency to be President and Commander-in-Chief....

Anyone could torment John McCain easily.

The one subject that he has no pat answers for, and for which he seems to be deeply ignorant is: The US Constitution.

Based on the bizarrely unconstitutional McCain-Feingold act, even basic questions about the Bill of Rights might utterly stump him.

What does he think the Supreme Court will decide about the Second Amendment case now before them? Does John McCain know what the Second Amendment is?

Imagine how he would be stumped if asked about the non-Constitutional use of Presidential Signing Statements by Bill Clinton and George W. Bush? Yet there is a good chance that in the next president’s term, they are going to be a major issue.

We he be like Bill Clinton and ignore the Constitution until forced to obey it by the courts?

I am voting McCain because:

1. He will not get us killed by his naivite.
2. His wife will not embarrass us and go on a rampage against white people.

I am voting for McCain because of the troops. Obama cannot be the Commander in Chief.

My vote is for my country, so I am voting for McCain.

I agree with McCain on 50% of the issues - so against him on 50% on the issues - but to compare that with 100% of the issues against Obama - do I have a choice as to who to vote for? I can’t believe all the Freepers who say they will not vote for McCain. This is scary!

C’mon with icing on the cake like that, how can you resist?

“Please tell me somebody asked McCain how he could have so easily fallen for the “global warming” hoax, and whether of not his being duped by the enviro-socialists calls into question his competency to be President and Commander-in-Chief....”

Global warming *hysteria* is a hoax, but there is enough scientific truth underneath the hysteria that any politician could be gulled into following the IPCC ‘consensus’ herd. Man has increased CO2 and CO2 has some effect on climate, just not as bad as the Goronic fearmonger make it out to be. Remember that most of us conservatives read the New York Times likes its USSR Pravda, McCain reads it like its The Daily Truth. SO he plays “lets cut a deal’ on this, while we just want to shut down the globaloney warming farce wholesale. That’s a problem of POV, but it doesnt make him incompetent, just not a true-blue conservative.

I will take the competent and patriotic moderate-to-conservative maverick over the zero-accomplishment gaffe-prone junior senator loves-anti-Americans leftist bamboozler who could get us all killed by his naive/overfriendly view of our Jihadist enemies.
