UN food agency chief Jacques Diouf said today that billions of dollars are being wasted on feeding obese people in the West while millions starve around the world.
"No one understands... how over-consumption by obese people in the world costs $20 billion each year," the head of the Food and Agriculture Organisation told an international summit on the food price crisis.
On top of this, he added, there are "$100 billion in indirect costs resulting from premature deaths and associated diseases."
Diouf also highlighted how an estimated $1.2 trillion was spent on weapons in 2006 while aid to agriculture fell by more than half, from $8 billion in 1984 to $3.4 billion in 2004.
"In real terms, the share of agriculture in public aid to development has fallen from 17 per cent in 1980 to three per cent in 2006," he said.
Recent food riots "are but the chronicle of a catastrophe that was foreseen," said Diouf, whose agency has been harshly criticised.
Diouf lamented the failure to reach a goal set by the 1996 World Food Summit in Rome of reducing the number of hungry by half by 2015.
"With current trends the summit's goal will be attained in 2150 instead of 2015," he added.
Diouf said "the international community reacts, unfortunately, only when the media bring into the living rooms of wealthy countries the sad spectacle of those who suffer in the world."
Jacques Diofus should check those Swiss and offshore bank accounts of various dictators around the world, in which a pro rata share of my stolen American aid tax dollars are earning a nice return for said dictators. Plenty of stolen billions to feed people there, Jacques. Furthermore, why castigate the West? There are plenty of super-rich and overfed Gulf sheiks and “princes” too.
This coming from a pissant at an organization that wastes and steals hundreds of billions of dollars every year. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.
It's neither of those. It's the little African kid's parents who fornicate all day churning out a dozen other kids who they also can't feed.
The arable land and other finite resources that would have 200 million - their population in 1950 - living reasonably well instead have 800 million living cheek and jowl and desperately snapping (or machete-ing as the case may be) at each other.
And if we send them more of our food the way this UN busybody would like, the only thing they'll make of it is even more Africans to spread that food just as thinly as it is now.
Apples and slices of oranges. What's the figure on the TOTAL spent on food - not just "aid", but all food?
That's not apples and oranges, it's Bull and spit. We passed a 307 billion dollar farm bill last month.
While our ships containing tons of relief supplies for the victims in Myanmar (Burma) were turned away.
SKREW ‘EM!
I believe I saw a post yesterday or the day before that the ship had left.
The quote that great philosopher Sam Kenison.
“You live in a desert! Nothing grows there! MOVE! You see all this surrounding you? Do you see it? Its called sand. You know what its going to be in 20 years? Its still going to be #$%$ing sand! MOVE!”
Well apparently the U.N. reps from Burma don’t think that starving people need food. Perhaps the UN food guy should speak to them first and fore most before castigating those countries who donated the rejected food.
People aren’t starving around the world because of an inadequate food supply. They starve because of their corrupt and inept governments.
Hey,I think you hit on it!
Don’t send sacks of flour. Send condoms.
I don’t think it’s the kids fault his parents “fornicate all day.”
“Like this POS has never had foie gras, creme brulee or champaigne?”
Actually he was served that at the conference to discuss the starving poeple. Oh and I think they had lobster as well.
Then we stop ALL food aid. Every last bit.
Inside of 6 months, the problem solves itself.
Next question ???
One World Order!
Obama will see that Americans starve right along side the Africans. Capitalism is the unequal distribution of wealth. Socialism is the equal distribution of poverty.
Found it, leaving ‘Thursday’, which I think could be today:
