CBS 2 News has learned that Francis Cardinal George is temporarily removing Father Michael Pfleger from his position as pastor of St. Sabina Roman Catholic Church on Chicago's South Side.
CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine reports the move comes after several days of deliberation and consultation by the Cardinal, who first learned about Pfleger's racially charged comments about Sen. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton from the pulpit of Trinity Unity Church of Christ last Thursday night.
The Cardinal immediately contacted Pfleger who agreed not to refer to the presidential candidates by name, but as CBS 2 reported at the time, there remained the possibility of some further disciplinary action against Pfleger.
The Cardinal reportedly spoke to Pfleger again this morning.
A spokesman for the archdiocese would neither confirm nor deny action had been taken to remove Pfleger. Another spokesman said she expected to have some announcement later today.
Indications are that another Chicago priest would take over at St. Sabina, while plans for the permanent reassignment of Father Pfleger, who's been there far longer than is customary in the archdiocese, would be accelerated....

Not exactly. It is a policy of some dioceses, but it is not mandatory that pastors be transferred after six years.
***Agreed long overdue. As I understand it priest are only permitted to stay at a parish for 6 years.***
Not so with a pastor, who serves at the direction of his bishop.
What needs to happen is a recall to Rome and a face to face smackdown with the Pope. I’m no Catholic, but you don’t have to be to imagine the scene.
Many (over the years) were simply transferred to other parishes. When the Catholic church could no longer keep a lid on the "problem," they finally took action. The removal of said priests wasn't a voluntary action by the church from the git-go, as you make it sound.
It’s best to ignore trolls.
Speaking the truth is getting pretty darn dull around here, eh?
Pfleger needs to pfind another pflock.
Bill O’Reilly called for this thing...I am sure he will be pleased as punch.
This is one of the many things I like about the church, Phleger was something I did not recognize. We are called to be humble, charitable, and people of God. I knew the church would take care of this problem and Phleger is an example of why it is so important to have dogma, structure, and organization.
Rev. Phleger has been openly supporting and promoting an open and strong public advocate of abortion and infanticide, intrinsically evil crimes, so serious that they warrant excommunication.
Cardinal George needs to demand that he either publicly denounce his support for Obama and all other death-lovers, or begin formal excommunication proceedings.
We will hear about it tonight.
Actually, it wasn't. The Cardinal was forced to act by the Catholic faithful. The spineless Cardinal has known about this idiot for years, but until he felt pressure, he did nothing.
Pleased? O'Reilly probably has convinced himself that Cardinal George took the step only because O'Reilly called for it.
LIAR, LIAR SNIPER FIRE! Unless you have ACTUAL and FACTUAL proof, I call BS.
I agree that it was not handled properly, but as you say, over the years, things HAVE been done properly.
Where do you get your facts? Are you even a Catholic?
I am tired of the false rumors. Back it up with facts or shut up!!
Knock it off.
The sad fact is that Pfleger is vitrually useless outside of a black liberation theology context. And of course a black liberation theology context is antithetical to Catholic doctrine.
It’s disgusting.
I’d guess we’ll see him next when he signs on with NBC as a political analyst.
Where have you been for the past few decades? Even Catholics readily admit these acts of impropriety have existed. I'd rather not insult your intelligence by telling you to do some research on the subject, or are you a Catholic in denial?
