Voters cranky as economy sours
Sacramento Bee ^ | 6/3/8 | Peter Hecht

As California voters go to the polls today in a low-turnout primary, those who bother to show up aren't likely to be happy.

With a teetering economy and an unpopular war, only 17 percent of voters in a new state Field Poll believe the country is headed in the right direction, the most dour view in 16 years.

With state government facing burgeoning debts and lawmakers debating sweeping cuts or tax hikes, only 23 percent believe California is on the right track, the worst rating in five years.

"It is hard to feel kindly about elected representatives and politicians in an era when you feel nothing is going right," said Jaime Regalado, director of the Pat Brown Institute of Public Affairs at California State University, Los Angeles.

Republican Patricia Oehler, 62, who plans to vote today, is deeply worried about the country's economic health. The Sacramento County employee is putting off retirement because she can't afford to quit working, and worries about long-term health care costs.

"I don't know if this is like the Great Depression of 1929, but it's a sad state of affairs," Oehler said. "I feel sorry for people who are barely getting by and for young people who are facing a bleak future."

Democrat Vicki Cabrera, 47, of Sacramento, who also plans to vote, directly feels the effects of a lagging economy. She lost her job as an administrative assistant for a real estate firm due to the weak Sacramento housing market.

"I've never in my life gone without a job. Never," said Cabrera, who had to let go three of her family's five prized Sacramento Kings season tickets and is contemplating selling her sports memorabilia collection.

The stories speak to gloomy perspectives of state voters.

""I don't know if this is like the Great Depression of 1929,..." Oehler said.

Don't worry! CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, NYTs, LA Times, will all work tirelessly to make you think it's the the Great Depression of 1929.

Another moron heard from.

"And she is furious that her congressman – Rep. Dan Lungren, R-Gold River – was spotted poolside in Hawaii after schmoozing with lobbyists "when hard-working people like me can't find a job."

So I guess you were besides yourself with the antics of Perata and Nunez weren't ya toots? And how about those hard working Democrats? The State's budget is out of balance by 20 billion dollars, and energy is sky high. Yeah. I just BET she's furious. At Dan Lungren.

And they will.

I had a conversation with one of those morons just the other day. He was whining about gas prices yet when I mentioned the 64 cents the government steals per gallon he didn't want to hear that, oh no, it's the big bad oil companies making "obscene "profits.

Oh hum, my wife and I will vote yes on 98 and vote for the sacrificial Republicans on the slate and the great state of Commufornia will go on getting more and more in debt.

Wow, I completely lost track of the date.
Thanks for reminding me. Yes on 98, No on 99...

(And on everything else - I'll pull out a copy of the San Jose Mercury News and vote the opposite of what they recommend...)

Yes. It is exactly like the Great Depression, only with iPods, cell phones, bottled water, HiDef TV, Viagra, liposuction, fast food, Botox, and the internet.

LOL!

The idiot California voter can't blame what happens in California on Bush or Cheney...

The reason is simple" the same idiots keep getting re-elected to the legislature!

Aren't these happy "progressive" California voters aware that the legislature decides how much is spent and not care whether expenses exceed income?

It's not rocket science. You have the government YOU keep voting for, idiots!
What's the latest California deficit?

$20 billion is it?

: )

That's not enough!
Yes on 99 must win AND NO on 99 must also be explicitly voted.

The one-man "No on 98" commitee set things up that way.

Yes on 98!

AND

NO on 99!

Good to see that this moonbat is consistent.
She obviously plans her future like a true "progressive". Sports memorabilia?

Season tickets to really expensive "entertainment?"

How is your emergency fund and individual retirement fund doing? Any contributions there?

In the mid-90’s the voters of California tried to get a hand on illegal immigration. They voted upwards of 60% to deny benefits to illegals. One judge shot it down saying it was unconstitutional and Gray Davis would not pursue it. Since then California has bleed thousands, if not millions, of productive citizens. Unfortunately too many of them brought their voting habits with them to their new states. Some never learn.

"moron"

Apparently the agenda of the Sac Bee is to interview as many morons as possible. My advice to Moron Oehler is to retire and then get out of California. There are plenty of states where it is far cheaper to live. To hear these words come out of the mouth of someone who describes herself as a Republican is enough to make me throw up.

"an unpopular war"

This is a typical gratuitous swipe at President Bush by the McClatchy clowns. The war is not an issue in this election. The biggest issues are Propositions 98 and 99.

I dunno, when the had a full decade of liberals Californian’s helped vote in Reagan. They voted in Arnold, a Republican. Get the judicial system fixed and the ‘tolerance’ for illegal invasion for votes is another matter. That takes time but pain creates necessity and necessity leads to drastic change in politics.

I don’t feel for Californian’s. Stop voting Democrat. Stop promoting the homosexual agenda and trying to ram it in the citizens behind using activist judges, gays are treated the same in our culture these days. Stop voting in females because females weren’t given a fair shake 50 years ago because it ‘feeeeeels right’. Females are horrible central planners.

I moved out of New Hampshire because the State now has a socialist judicial and legislative branch. I don’t live in States where I have to worry if I took a green *hit or a brown one. Interestingly enough, I see ads from both California and New Hampshire instructing citizens to come move on in and how great it is. How about State government promoting personal freedoms and accountability to our constitution?
