Who says there's no humor in politics? Obama communications director Robert Gibbs went on ABC's This Week today, and in one of the best bits of deadpan comedy seen since Buster Keaton, actually said that Barack Obama's decision to quit the Trinity United Church of Christ was "not political."
GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: In Philadelphia, just in April, Senator Obama said of Reverend Wright "I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community." Now he's cut all ties to Reverend Wright, and left his church. What is it a mistake to wait this long?
ROBERT GIBBS: No, George. I think obviously what Barack Obama made in the past few days is a deeply personal, not a political decision. And as you heard the reasoning, he made that decision for two reasons. One, even guest speakers that were at Trinity, their views were ascribed to him even though he didn't hold those views, and secondly, the members of Trinity couldn't do what members of a church do, and that is, sit in quiet reflection and worship God.

Bob’ll be at Laff Shack all week ping to Today show list.
Yes, and the Pope is after all, Catholic....
But why did he wait until a WHITE CATHOLIC priest took to the pulpit?? Hmmmmm
Baghdad Bob.....
LOL: perfect!
Well, that's true, sure enough. But how come Obama sat there for 20 years without noticing it, and brought his wife and family with him, too?
Now he says he doesn't plan to join any church before next January at the earliest. That doesn't sound like a very good plan for him or his family to sit (or kneel) in quiet reflection and worship the Christian God.
Just how often has this guy gone to church in the past 20 years, anyway?
” ...sit in quiet reflection and worship God.” Whoopin’ and hollerin’ seem to be that congregations modus operandi.
Somehow, I don't think the Pope would approve.
Priest was a flake...
Heh. You nailed it.
Obama resigned that church so publicly because he simply had to.
He’s in trouble. And evidently there’s folks in his own church who want to keep up the show.
I think his resignation is a Hail Mary pass.
I don’t think Obama has a chance to be this country’s next president. not to mention, please, his lovely first lady Michelle Ma belle Obama who is no proud of her country and thinks we are mean.
Ain’t gonna happen.
You seem skeptical of the claim? You know it takes about 20 years or so before you get to know your church! Give him seven more years and he will figure out his wife is a racist and leave her too!
LOL: nailed it!
If decision not political, why did Obama provide this tidbit in answering a question about is “resignation” yesterday: “My suspicion at that time, and Michelle, I think, shared this concern, was that it was going to be very difficult to continue our membership there so long as I was running for president.”

Oh, the joy of sitting in quiet reflection and worshiping God.
Lets hope Obama can find a church where the congregation doesn’t get up and claps, stomps and yells at every anti-white/anti-American rant that comes from the pulpit. This is where Obama sat for 20 years. Did Obama stomp, yell and clap??
Inquiring minds would like to know
Yeah, well, um, running for president, but, uh, not in a, like, um, a political way. Yeah, that’s the ticket!
Oh, now it’s OUR fault that Trinity members jump up and down, clap, yell, and laugh while their preachers scream, jump up and down, and yell. If WE (the media-consuming public) weren’t intruding, they would be sitting quietly in contemplation!
“If Barack acted like a n word....”
In two words...BRAVO SIERRA.
