Senior advisers to Senator Hillary Clinton have prepared the ground for her to abandon her presidential ambitions within days rather than disputing the Democratic nomination all the way to the party convention in August.
Senator Barack Obama is expected to be able to declare himself the party's candidate against Senator John McCain as early as tomorrow, when South Dakota and Montana become the final states to hold their primaries. Howard Dean, the Democratic National Committee chairman, said the nomination would be decided this week: "We don't want to go to the convention, have a big fight at the convention, and lose the presidency."
A dispute over whether and how to seat delegates from Michigan and Florida was resolved on Saturday by giving each delegate only half a vote as a penalty for those states defying the party by holding early primaries.
The Clinton camp was unhappy with the decision, which raised the number of delegates needed for victory from 2,025 to 2,118, but showed little appetite to challenge.
Just after the polls close, Mr Obama, who could be accompanied by senior Democratic Party figures, is to hold a huge rally in St Paul, Minnesota, at the venue where Mr McCain is due to accept the Republican nomination in September.
His aides were working furiously yesterday to amass the two dozen or so "super-delegates" party officials whose convention votes are not tied to the primaries he would need to ensure that the South Dakota and Montana results give him a majority.

I wouldn’t bet the farm on this...Hitlery is not one to concede.
Have they informed Mrs. Clinton of this?
Well, if you nominate Obama, losing the Presidency is guaranteed, so why not let it go to Denver?
Who knows what Hillary Sirhan Clinton can pull out of her hat?
This could be series and hugh! I am shoked.
Nooooooooooo..... Denver....Denver....Denver....!
This is a British paper reporting this, if it makes any difference.
You are 100% correct IMHO. Find it hard to believe if she ever wants to run again that she would quit the race. Still cannot figure how they could give votes from MI to Obama when he was not on the ballot, but then it is the Dems!
My personal opinion is she is holding out, or maybe a better way to say it she's holding the convention hostage for SCOTUS seat when Ruth Ginsberg retires. A woman replaces a woman
It's a life long appointment, serious clout and in many ways a more powerful position than the POTUS.
JMHO
Hillary seems to be pulling out all the stops in South Dakota. We are being barraged with TV and radio ads, I have been getting about one automated phone call a day. Even Bill and Chelsea are still stumping the state. The race seems too close to call, but we will know on Tuesday. Hillary is like a zombie in a horror movie and just keeps coming back even when thought dead.
Do the british papers ever get anything right?
Is there even a new media in the UK?
They don’t seem to have a viable blogisphere.
One of these days America will wish they had Bush back. LOL
Why would she want to do that?
Could the Obomba/Hellary ticket be arriving soon?
Well, if the rumors are true about the infamous "whitey" tapes and they come out tomorrow... Hillary is gonna get some fresh legs. I suppose all the superdelegates can switch their votes over to Hillary...
Yep, they think the Tues. Primaries are tomorrow.
I’ll believe it when I see it with my own eyes and hear it with my own ears, and maybe not even then!
I wonder how many ashtrays and lamps Hill’s gone through during the collapse of her inevitability?
You really think McCain would nominate her? I thought he was going to ask her to run as his VP.....
