There has been a waterproof, oil absorbing polypropylene pad available for quite a few years. The new technology is in its “super-absorbent” quality.

towels can remain dry despite being placed underwater for an entire month, yet can easily absorb contaminants like oil.

Very interesting.

Years ago a comedian suggested using Denny’s pancakes to absorb oil spills since you can put an entire bottle of syrup on them and it disappears.
