Election 2008: Mississippi Senate Special
Rasmussen Reports ^ | May 29, 2008

Mississippi’s appointed U.S. Senator Roger Wicker (R) finds himself in a very tight election battle to win the job on his own. University of Virginia’s Larry Sabato has noted that this will be a “real political battle” which is “a rarity in a state that’s usually red as red can be.”

The first Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of the race finds a pure toss-up--former Governor Ronnie Musgrove (D) attracts 47% of the vote while Wicker earns 46%.

This is a bad sign.

Does anyone know how Musgrove was polling against Haley Barbour in 2003?

I was polled in this survey. AC 202-686-9749 was the number they polled from to me. I thought the poll was somewhat biased because some of the questions were like...Did you know that Wicker is supported by big oil and one of the reasons for high prices? Very few of the negative questions were toward Musgrove. I asked them if they were aware of Musgroves involvement in the trust monies that involved a Nashville woman. I asked if they were aware of Musgroves' involvement in trying to rid the state of our flag and Confederate Monuments. Were they aware of Musgrove's involvement in the Beef plant fiasco? None of the issues I was familiar with did the questioners know. The polling individuals were aware with much of Wicker's involvement though.

Probably trying out hot-button issues for future campaign commercials.

The Democrats are running a smart strategy. Look who they recruit - former governor. McConnell is 5 points down according to Ras. Bad.

Rasmussen doesn’t use live pollsters.

Just repeat the chant: “Musgrove looks for his leadership to the surrender socialist Harry Reid.”

In the other Mississippi Senate race, Thad Cochran enjoys a sizable lead and should cruise to re-election.

In that case, Thad needs to get out there and campaign WITH Roger Wicker, so folks will connect the two. After all, they'll be voting for both at the same time all over the state. Together, Wicker and Cochran can push the idea of the incompetency of the Democrats on Energy policy and their lack of support for the troops since they took the majority in 2006. They can also stress how well the two of them would work together for Mississippi!

The pollster sounded live to me. I know he wasn't dead and he repeated the questions when I asked him to. This could have been another poll that used live pollsters but it sure was long.

Seriously, what method does Rasmussen use?

Rasmussen uses automated phone calls to conduct polling. You would not be speaking to a live person. It would ask questions like “For Barack Obama, if you view him very favorable press 1, for somewhat favorable press 2, for somewhat unfavorable press 3, for very unfavorable press 4.”

In 2003, Barbour and Musgrove were close, albeit with Haley with a slight lead. Keep in mind, the 1999 Governor race was close too between Musgrove and Parker. I just don’t see McConnell and Wicker actually losing their Senate seats with McCain leading Obama in KY and MS.

Rasmussen I believe is pre-recorded and you respond on your phonepad numerics.

The final poll before the election by the Clarion Ledger show Barbour 50% Musgrove 45%.

On election day, it was Barbour 53% Musgrove 47%.
