Scott McClellan’s New Spin
Cross Action News ^ | 5-30-08 | Jacob Laksin

If there’s one point of convergence between the Bush administration’s friends and foes it is in the bipartisan belief that many of the president’s hiring decisions cannot be considered a success. Whether it was the amiable but under-qualified Harriet Miers or the well-meaning but fumbling Alberto Gonzalez, the president has a distressing knack for rewarding loyalty and friendship above competence and merit. The case of Scott McClellan, the ex-White House press secretary and former presidential favorite whose sniping tell-all about the Bush presidency has the political world abuzz, does not offer a counterexample.

Wasn’t Scott McClellan’s father a nut job too? It must run in the family.

During an election year a book praising a Republican President won't get a second of airplay, right? Man's gotta feed his family.

Didn’t RTFA past what is excerpted here, but: 1. Sorry to everyone for having marginally defended McClellan here the other day. 2. Harriet Miers is a useless loser. 3. So is Gonzalez. Both episodes were massively embarrassing for our country and the entire GOP.

Yes, he worked for LBJ private law firm and then wrote a book about LBJ being involved in JFK’s murder.

Those McClellans are sure fond of writing “tell all” books aren’t they?

"Wasn’t Scott McClellan’s father a nut job too? It must run in the family."

I wonder if he's in any way a descendant of George McClellan...another feckless figure that had to be canned by the President (Lincoln) in the search for somebody competent.

McClellan is a lightweight who was in way over his head as Press Secretary. No doubt he was not influential and that probably frustrated him. I understand he was basically shown the door and he's not been successful in cashing in with the private sector. I read him as embittered and doing this for revenge and money.

the administration “was all about manipulating sources of public opinion to the president’s advantage"

Well, yeah, isn't the Press Secretary of any President supposed to do that?

I agree. The deer-in-the-headlights look doesn't inspire great confidence.

In many ways Bush is like U.S. Grant.

Moral, nice guy, straight up and too trusting of others, to a fault.
