Washington is laid to waste. The Capitol is a blackened, smoking ruin. The White House has been razed. Countless thousands are dead.
This is the apocalyptic scene terrorists hope to create if they ever get their hands on a nuclear bomb.
The computer-generated image below was posted on an Islamic extremists' website yesterday.
It appeared as rumours swept the Internet that the FBI was warning that an Al Qaeda video was about to be released urging militants to use weapons of mass destruction to attack the West.
The information was said to be coming from 'groups that monitor Islamic militant websites'.
The FBI was quick to point out that it had not issued any warning and that the video was not an official Al Qaeda release through its media arm, Al Sahab, but simply an ' amateur' collection of old footage spliced together and posted on the Internet.
U.S. analysts said a lot of effort had been put into the video - entitled Nuclear Jihad, The Ultimate Terror - with graphics, music, and clips of different leaders and groups.
The same expertise seems to have gone into creating this image of a devastated Washington.
Al Sahab puts out more than 80 'officially sanctioned' videos a year to keep up the propaganda on the West. And the Internet shows how easy it is to stir up militancy. One message with the Washington picture said: 'The next strike's in the heart of America. When? When? When? And How?'
Last night FBI sources said Al Qaeda was desperate to get its hands on a weapon of mass destruction, be it nuclear, chemical, or biological.
So far that is only a dream... or, as this picture suggests, a nightmare.

Note: An attack on Washington alone would not cripple the U.S. ability to strike back. Strategic Command would be intact. NORAD would be intact. The senior generals who survived—and there would be many—would take over the positions of the Joint Chiefs. There are no bombers in Washington. There are no missiles in Washington. There are no nuclear submarines in Washington. There are no airborne divisions, tank brigades, or infantry brigades near Washington, save for the honor guards of the 3rd Infantry and Marine Barracks.
Politically, the Senate could be refilled within days, since the Governors of the several states can appoint a Senator to fill the term of a vacant seat. The Senate could meet in Baltimore and wait for the special elections required to fill the House of Representatives.
Government agencies routinely back up data to places outside of Washington in an exercise which is part of Continuity of Operations (COOP). Pensioners might not even miss a check.
Most of the military bases are outside the immediate burst radius of the bomb depicted in the picture. The only bases that would be destroyed would be Fort Myer, Henderson Hall, the Marine Barracks at 8th and I, the Navy Yard, and Bolling Air Force Base. That would leave Fort Belvoir, Andrews Air Force Base, Fort Meade, Naval Station Annapolis, and Coast Guard Sector Baltimore functional. Law and order and emergency services could be hindered, but would function to some extent.
The greatest loss outside of human life would be cultural, with the destruction of the treasures in the Smithsonian and the Library of Congress. The Iwo Jima Memorial and the Air Force Memorial would be vaporized.
Now, how are they going to get a bomb into Washington? Probably by truck. I suspect from the picture the bomb was detonated on the I-395 bridge by the Pentagon. But such a bomb is bigger than a suitcase.
It would be a world of hurt, and I might die in such an attack, but there would be an American government and an angry American people.
You are evidently unaware of the famous quote, by Zawahiri as I remember, that goes like this:
"You in the west love life; we crave death"
The Quran cites the highest achievement for a Muslim is to die in jihad against the infidels.
As far as time to brainwash terrorists: thousands of Madrassas (Islamic schools) are doing that day in day out throughout the middle east and have been doing it for years. Most of what they teach is rote recitation of the Quran!
And before you vote, it might be well to remember that Obama attended a Madrassas in Indonesia until he was 10 reciting the Quran!

Not sure conversion is the appropriate word. One does not convert when one simply begins to espouse publically what one has believed for years - maybe since Madrassas school in Indonesia until he was 10.

Let’s look at it this way; if any terrorist group was to unleash any type of WMD against any American city then most of the Middle East would become a sheet of glass in no time. There would be swift retaliation and it would much more massive than they could ever believe. They would most likely be wiped off the face of the earth.
Not really. If the cities are ever hit hard, the Democrats will lose a lot of voters.

How about a deep crater where Mecca and Medina were.
Judging from the hole in the dome and nearby ruins it looks to me that whoever did the nuke in the picture was in the wrong place. Since most of the Capital building is standing that means that very important targets on the other side such as the White House, FBI, Pentagon would of suffered less damage.
Lets say the terrorists had a Hiroshima gun time nuke of about the same power. I am going to guess that the nuclear weapon was exploded a mile or more east from the Capital.
Not naming the enemy properly; calling it a "war on terror", a war on "evil people". Eventually letting tens of thousands of "students" come in from countries we know harbor America-hating imams and ideologues. We didn't let mass immigration in from Germany and Italy during WWII.
Not locking down the borders and combing through the population to detain suspected people. Letting "human rights organizations" like CAIR set the agenda to eliminate profiling.
Immediate large scale changes in energy policy so as to reduce dependency upon countries where the enemies of the US are given aid and comfort. It is imperative to fight this war along economic fronts.
Not having Congress officially declare war, and the consequences of going on a war footing. It is said that only the military is at war, not the general population.
I am sure there are other matters that can be pointed out. For instance, the ideological factors involved with Universities, media and other elites. "Traison des clercs."

On the bright side, 395 South wouldn’t be too crowded during the afternoon rush.
Plus, the picture is meant to represent DC 300 years after a nuclear war, so much of the ruining of the city would have happened well after the blast itself.
That's my feeling. If anything, I think they're even less likely to respond now. Sorry to be so negative, but these people should already have been wiped out and fear of the US should have been struck deep into hearts of Muslims everywhere. But it ain't gonna happen, even if the horror in that photo comes to pass.
Attackers did not know they were to die

They can get some to do suicide missions but it is not that easy or we would have a lot more of them and more casualties. The Koran and the various pronouncements of terrorists notwithstanding, it is not that easy.
