NC Poll: Dole Leads Hagan 45-43
The Civitas Institute ^ | May 23, 2008

U.S. Senator Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) and state Senator Kay Hagan (D-Guilford) are in a statistical dead heat according to the latest poll released by the Civitas Institute.

Of the 800 likely general election voters surveyed, 45 percent support Senator Dole while 43 percent support her challenger, Democrat Kay Hagan. Twelve percent were undecided.

“The national tide against Republican incumbents is definitely hurting Senator Dole right now,” said Francis DeLuca, Executive Director of the Civitas Institute. “It appears some of the cross-over appeal to Democrats and Unaffiliated voters she enjoyed six years ago is eroding.”

Elizabeth Dole won her first victory in part due to her celebrity and non-political image. Now, she’s seen as more of a typical public official. I still expect her to pull it out, however.

To her shame, Liddy Dole said almost nothing about the Duke lacrosse rape hoax and the sickness it showed in North Carolina’s legal system. When a case truly called for a federal investigation, a senator of the state in question was quiet.

An incumbent polling under 50% is in trouble.

“An incumbent polling under 50% is in trouble.”

Correct.

North Carolina needs judicial reform; enactment of a Speedy Trial law; a requirement for Grand Juries to keep transcripts; bail reform; the right of a defendant to have a Probable Cause hearing; and many other things, any one of which could have prevented the Duke lacrosse frame-up.

As of now, there is nothing in place to prevent another such frame-up attempt in a few years.

Where was Dole when all of this was happening?

Right now I think Hagan will send her packing. Those Jesse Helms coattails don’t mean what they used to anymore.

No better than the Democratic establishment. Attorney General Roy Cooper got the spotlight moment for declaring the players “innocent,” which they transparently were.

In reality, he had all the legal justification he needed to take over the investigation within two months of the allegations emerging. Due to Democratic party politics, he chose not to, until Nifong was hit with an ethics complaint and was forced off the case and opposing him was no longer a politically courageous step. Justice was delayed six months or more because the DP was invested in Nifong’s position.
