ormer White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan writes in a surprisingly scathing memoir to be published next week that President Bush veered terribly off course, was not open and forthright on Iraq, and took a permanent campaign approach to governing at the expense of candor and competence.
Among the most explosive revelations in the 341-page book, titled What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washingtons Culture of Deception (Public Affairs, $27.95):
McClellan charges that Bush relied on propaganda to sell the war.
He says the White House press corps went too easy on the administration.
He admits that some of his own assertions from the briefing room podium turned out to be badly misguided.
The longtime Bush loyalist also suggests that two top aides held a secret West Wing meeting to get their story straight about the CIA leak case at a time when federal prosecutors were after them and McClellan was continuing to defend them despite mounting evidence they had not given him the full facts.
McClellan asserts that the aides Karl Rove, the presidents senior adviser, and Lewis Scooter Libby, the vice presidents chief of staff had at best misled him about their role in the disclosure of former CIA operative Valerie Plames identity.
A few reporters were offered advance copies of the book, with the restriction that their stories not appear until Sunday, the day before the publication date. Politico declined, and purchased What Happened at a Washington bookstore.

“Stupid is as stupid does” ...
LOL! :^D
I recall during those press conferences wondering whether there was something in the Beltway water supply that leeched testosterone.
Hey, Scott McClellan, you sucked then; you suck now.
And, yes, it is yet another weary example of our president damaging his and America's interests by allowing personal loyalty to replace leadership.
This McClellan guy needed the vaudeville hook to drag his pathetic butt off stage in his first days.
I want a press secretary like the pro-wrestler who showed John Stossel that, yes, Virginia, we really do hit each other in the ring.
Think David Gregory in a neck brace.
Carole Keeton Strayhorn (Scott McClellan's Mom)
"..Carole Keeton Strayhorn (born September 13, 1939) is the former Texas state comptroller of public accounts, a position that now includes most of the duties of the former state treasurer, a position abolished by Texas voters in 1996.
Elected to the comptroller's post in 1998 as a Republican, Strayhorn ran as an independent candidate for Texas governor against GOP incumbent James Richard "Rick" Perry in 2006. She lost the November general election to Perry and placed third in a five-way race, with 18 percent..."
As a long shot guess Pres. Bush would certainly support the GOP candidate over Scott's mom.
You’re correct there. He sees that McCain won’t win and that the Pubs will lose all semblance of power they once held. He’s no better than the rest of the elected Republican establishment in Washington fattening up their campaign coffers only to decide to ‘retire’ on the taxpayer and questionable campaign fund transfers yet to be implemented. They see rough times ahead and they are too chicken$hit to fight for their ideals (if they really ever had any)like men. I am about to put the ‘politician’ back down to the same level as “attorney” right there along with “priests”
He should have choked the bastard.
Amen!
bump! bump! bump!
I for the life of me cannot figure that one out, and if the man is honest and forthcoming, I hope he comes clean on that one, too. If not, he needs to be asked on the talk show/book tour round he will be taking. I dont want to hear 10 years later what was going in the Bush Administration over SHAMNESTY, but rather now while they are still in power.
There's loyalty, and then there's loyalty.....
I'm still waiting for the President to give US citizens an explanation why our borders are not secured (7 years after 9/11) and why he's comfortable with amnesty for millions of illegals and ignoring the 'rule of law'....
Everyone is thinking IRAQ, but these Scott McClellan revelations may give us a valuable, pristine, rare OPEN WINDOW to view the inner workings of the opaque Bush Administration over the whole fiasco of Open Borders and Amnesty for Millions of Criminals and other Lawbreakers during the last few years.
The Honorable Mr Blair is one of the few folks in MY lifetime to have EARNED the appellation of Honorable...
Truly a man of courage, alongside our President Bush...
