Barr: Obama and McCain the real spoilers
CNN ^ | May 26, 2008 | Josh Levs

(CNN) – Former Rep. Bob Barr, the newly-selected Libertarian presidential nominee, rejected suggestions Monday that he could spoil his former party's chances of holding onto the White House.

"There are two folks that are out to spoil the race here — it's Senator Obama and Senator McCain. They're setting out, I think, to spoil our chances," he told CNN's "American Morning."

He added, "There are millions of voters out there that are not going to vote for Senator McCain, and we aim to reach those voters with the message of smaller government and more individual liberty."

For years, Barr was a prominent Georgia Republican in the House. He played a leading role in the impeachment of former President Bill Clinton.

His positions on some issues have left some Libertarians unsure about his candidacy. He opposed legalizing marijuana for medical purposes, supported the Patriot Act, and co-sponsored the Defense of Marriage Act.

While the Defense of Marriage Act was backed by opponents of gay marriage, and allowed states not to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states, Barr told CNN Monday that it was a "very sound individualistic and states' rights policy."

And he said he has been working for five years "to either amend or repeal the Patriot Act because of the way it has been used and abused by the Bush administration to curtail the civil liberties of American citizens in this country. We can defend America without taking away civil liberties and privacy rights of American citizens, and we ought to be doing that."

He also supports U.S. withdrawal from Iraq.

Barr, 59, left the Republican Party in 2006, and announced in April that he would form a presidential exploratory committee. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1994 and represented a conservative district

The gerrymandering made him run against John Linder who I am sure you know is the major proponent for the FAIR TAX.I cant think of anyone who could unseat Mr Linder with the support the man has in his district.

In an extremely tight race, a Libertarian candidate might get enough votes to swing the race towards the Democrats in one or two states, but keep in mind that in 2004 the Libertarian candidate got only 0.38% of the vote...slightly less than Ralph Nader.

Barr and his Third Party anti war lemmings are just another version of the Marxist Obama crowd.

When Obama takes away their right to bear arms, and appoints Far left judges of the Supreme Court these BarrBets can thank themselves.

What has happened in the world in the past 20+ years and especially the Carter Adm. the buildup in Muslim countries of weapons that take take out vast areas not including suicide bombers is coming to a neighborhood
soon to you.

this is not 1955, there won’t be a next time with Obama who the Third Party lemmings will help elect

People are free to vote for whom they choose. Claiming that a third party candidate can somehow be a spoiler is ridiculous. Major party candidates need to earn votes; they're not entitled to them.

Incidentally, Barr will get my vote before McCain will.

Maam, with all due respect, with a mindset like yours, please don't dare open your mouth if Obama is elected to serve as our next Commander-in-Chief.

The Conservative purists in our Freeper organization should take a moment to grasp the rudiments of Political Science 101. It is indeed a very gray world out there — and those purists who cast their lots with black and white ideologues often do great harm to the true Conservative movement. Kindest best wishes for a most meaningful Memorial Day.

Strange statement to make about someone who wiped the floor with his rivals for the GOP nomination

Getting less than half the popular votes doesn't quite qualify as "wiping the floor" with anything.

You are absolutely correct. You have every right to vote for a third party candidate, or even stay home and not vote for that matter.

In practical terms these amount to the same thing, of course.

Agreed. I'm certainly not deluded enough to think my single vote will have an impact. But in certain situations I just can't bring myself to vote for a particular candidate, and this is one of them. I view it as a personal decision rather than a public statement.

Bears repeating often.

Really? Bill Clinton didn't wipe the floor with George H. W. Bush and Bob Dole?

With McDemocrat and Hussein as your two nominees....you’ve already lost. You just don’t know it yet.

*snicker* There are plenty of mugs out there. People just love open borders, amnesty, getting hoodwinked taxed for junk science like global warming, embryonic stem cell research, repeal of freedom of speech, and the likes of Jon Cary as a foreign policy advisor. oh don’t forget the the many democrats that would be inserted into his cabinet.

Just wow, I am sure you will get a mug for that post.

Like it or not, McCain’s the only bright spot for REPUBLICANS right now.

At least be honest about the creep.

Yes. Barr has always been palatable to the socons, being unashamed of his faith. He is a conservative with true libertarian leanings, making him a very comfortable fit for ficons. It is his position on the war that will confound him.

The Conservative purists in our Freeper organization should take a moment to grasp the rudiments of Political Science 101.

I would submit that the 'conservative purists' here have called it correctly all the way along- When they say 'doom', it is doom. It was those 'purists' that said Bush the elder would fail, and he did. It was those 'purists' who said Dole would fail, and he did. The same for the spanking that the Republicans took in 06.

It is ever the Conservatives that dictate the fate of the party, and they are ignored at our peril.

That being said, I am not endorsing Romney as VP either, as he is neither conservative, nor a viable candidate. It is my position that McCain will fail regardless of any extenuation.
