>>>There have been numerous reports of debris from Iowa falling in Wisconsin. That counts as far away.

I so much agree with you. I have been on FR for at least 10 years. Actually, I think it is longer. But I was on when it was Whitewater. I love the political side of it, and I understand that was the whole reason for the site. In the meantime, other things were posted, albeit not breaking, but the things that were, helped a lot of people. I remember the shuttle that broke up, and all freepers were out watching to see when it should be passing over their area.
Things like that, weather that is still happening in real time, amber alerts, anything that is in the moment is breaking news to me. Some people are at work and have no access to TV or radio appreciate this information. I sign in everyday to Drudge. I check his page, and then I go to FR and it stays on all day, and I keep refreshing until I leave work. It has always been my biggest way of info all day long.
I love FR, and don’t want it to change the important info I love and have come to expect all these years.
OMG
BREAKING NEWS:
Feinstein: Obama should pick Clinton to be VP
That was Breaking yesterday during the tornadoes, too.
Ominous!
Iowa: Dubuque Under tornado warning now...as well as the Ames area now too.
the video on kcrg just turns your stomach
The mile-wide, 75 miles on the ground is without question F5.
That picture was of Hugo.
WOW, that looks like those 2 fronts are going to converge right over my house.
Oh boy... Chester is busy....disaster declarations coming out...
>>>the video on kcrg just turns your stomach
Looks just like pictures from 40 years ago in Charles City, IA.
Mark for legitimate “Breaking News”!
2 confirmed fatalities from Parkersburg, IA - 15+ injured from Parkersburg taken to Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo
KCRG reports 2 fatalities.
Now this becomes a Killer Storm.
Adding insult to injury - more storms developing & moving over areas already devastated by tornadoes causing flooding...
That’s the case for me, too (checking breaking news for what’s up in a quick glance when I’ve only got a few minutes at the computer, in particular)
Even moreso when you live on a coast, I think...as we seem to be less apt to hear breaking news via other channels, for the middle portion of the country, and even the other coast.
Yet for me this is breaking news.
I have family and friends in these incredibly storm prone areas and wouldn’t know to check on them and to be praying if it weren’t for seeing it on FR...or I’d hear once the danger was over, etc.
At least when it’s an immediate threat it seems like it’s breaking news to the rest of the country, as few of us are completely isolated into our own regions with no ties elsehwere.
Just as I know for my family and friends last year the CA wildfires that caused me to leave my home with flames in my landscaping and parking structure on fire was also breaking news.
In an active danger area, especially due to something that may down powerlines or crippling cell towers make other means of dispensing news often impossible.
That’s one of the things I so appreciate(d?) about FR, which is why these threads the last two days makes me sad.
The tornado that went through Parkersburg, IA now appears to have dissipated near Dubuque...estimates are it was on the ground for as long as 4 hours.
That may have touched a nerve, as Free Republic is based in California, in fact quite close to a huge wildfire that is presently out of control.
I live in CA and have followed wildfires threads with interest, but other FReepers have huge problems with our state, to put it mildly. Maybe the mods justifiably get tired of that attitude but I am only guessing here.
Anyway, I find weather interesting and wish all the best to those in the paths of these tornados.
but a new set of storms is forming over the Des Moines area
Thats one of the things I so appreciate(d?) about FR, which is why these threads the last two days makes me sad.
By these standards all of the live discussion of NYC and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001 would have been buried in "chat".
Where did this thread go?
We’re in chat with the “bikini contest”.
