If there's one thing that's worse than paying $4 per gallon for gasoline, it's the resurgent talk of lowering speed limits to conserve fuel.
Because, of course, these lowered limits won't be enforced as a "conservation" measure.
Any curtailment of speed limits will be treated as a saaaaafety issue -- just as happened during the Dark Decades of the 55 mph National Maximum Speed Limit. "Speeding" tickets will be issued and "points" assigned. At the stroke of a lawmaker's pen (and the cop's, too) driving "x" MPH will suddenly become "unsafe," rather than merely wasteful.
This is the most intolerable aspect of the whole scam.

“Is 55 in Our Future?”
That and perhaps 10 hour work days / 4 days per week might help.

The latter would be more effective than the former.
Oh, how well I remember! Back at that time I was traveling 75 miles a day to work and back. At 55MPH on the interstate it seemed to take for ever. Especially, since I was working 6 to 7 days a week, 11 & 12 hrs a day.
I'd actually like that better then 8 X 5. Gives me a whole extra day off to drive up to the mountains and go fishing...:)
I already drive 55. That’s as fast as my Yugo will go.
One foot on the brake and one on the gas, hey!...
And the biggest benefit of 55 that nobody dare mention:
Municipal Revenue Generation

it is your time, your gas and with any luck at all....your fish ;O)

My wife already does that. I typically work 12 hours/6 days per week, but it's all at my home office. I put it 56 hours M-Th of this week.
I have a feeling we will be hearing (hopefully that’s all) a lot more about a return to 55. This topic was covered in the op/ed page of my local rag today.
Didn’t care then will not care in the future.
Just another law created to generate income for the lawyers...
I already drive 55. I also keep my heat/AC completely off. I never did either of those things prior to about two months ago. I went from averaging 325 miles to a tank of gas (4 dr sedan) to over 400 miles. I also top off my tank before it hits 1/2. Shop locally, I walk to the store two blocks away rather than drive a 40 mile round trip to (unless there is a really good sale) Safeway. I am hoping to have my car paid off before gas hits $6 per gallon....because that extra $400 per month can just go into my tank.
And indoor temperatures will be regulated to over 80 degrees in the summer and under 62 in the winter.
