“But I still have one nagging question: How is the Republican Party ever going to recover with McCain as its leader? Surely he will be the last GOP President, and then what?”
We’ll just have to wait and see.
Regardless of his failings, and there are many, having McCain serve four years as a “placeholder president” will buy time for Republicans to try to figure out what kind of future they have in an America that is rapidly changing, demographically and politically.
If McCain _is_ “the last GOP president”, it will say less about him than it does about changes to America - changes that make it less and less likely that Republicans and conservatives will have a major voice on the national stage for some time to come (if ever again).
What we are witnessing is the fruition of the Immigration Reform Act of 1965, a law that was destined to change the poltical and ethnic colors of America. Of course, that was pooh-poohed back then, but those changes were inevitable, once America was no longer to be protected as a Euro-centric nation. It has taken forty years, but this reality can no longer be denied or denigrated away.
Like a tsunami, the 1965 law was the “generational event” that launched the wave, which for decades has raced silently beneath the ocean surface. It is just now beginning to break into the national consciousness, hence the concern [mostly amongst Euros] about immigration over the past 5-10 years. But once you actually _see_ the wave bearing down upon you, it’s almost too late.
Wish I could be more optimistic. But one thing’s for sure, with McCain we have at least a chance of treading water for a while.
Obama would intentionally push conservatism beneath the wave.

This election is more like choosing between lung cancer and pancreatic cancer....
I see us being in a fight for our Nation's existence, and I see a vote for McCain as, at least, a stalling of the danger.
This is an emergency. This election has been freakish and frightening in the possible results. It calls for immediate (this election) action.
We've learned much, and we can regroup after this election—and I think THAT is the good that will come out of this. We SHALL regroup.
I realize that many of us are just going to have to disagree here; but, for me, I know that I am correct.
Good to see you back, sir.
History, of course, is replete with wisdom.

Join FALCON. We are going to take back the country for our founders and our posterity’s sake.
BTW--Mr. Robinson--I forgot to say how wonderful it is to have you back! Thank the Lord!
I see the forces have brainwashed you to a vote against Hitler or Pol Pot you would select one of them. Me -- I'm holding strong & not supporting anyone who does not represent my views on a many of the issues. I guesss Chuck Baldwin gets my 3rd party vote as 4 out of the 5 last votes did.
Still a choice in that.
(KoRn came from North High!)
You expect the dem prez will do the same?
How many of the dems have called for outright surrender and general pullout?
Do you think those in their right minds (no pun)will have obama's ear, or is there a possibility that the likes of Turbin durbin, stark, ried and their ilk will have influence?
I guess the question is, just how far are you willing to let this country sink in the hopes of the sheeple then waking up and revolting? Be advised, the media will not be on your side, ever, and sheeple love their good morning america pablum
McVain is neither Hitler nor Pol Pot. Obama could easily be either.
“...whose only attribute I like is that he smokes”
Hate to break it to you, but he quit.
(Poof!)
Most sane people are voting for McCain.
Im curious as to how we ended up in this situation. I think the question is not what will we do. The question is what will you do? Will you continue to torpedo Republican candidates that you dont agree with? Will you have a running (Candidate X) Truth File each election cycle to attack those candidates you deem not conservative enough? You had a big hand in making this McCain bed, and I think its time you slept in it.

Being as you seek to inject sanity into this, why don’t you ask the GoP why they keep shooting themselves in the feet?

I’ll take the Turncoat RINO. Having Obama or Hillary as our Command-in-Chief and head of state would be the worst possible outcome. McCain is the only realistic chance of preventing that, and keeping the pressure on Iran.
Obama is stupid enough to do just that and more.
I have to go with John “no coat-tails” McCain.
Welcome home! Can’t keep a good man down, now can they? As to your question, I’ll quote the bumpersticker I saw the other day... Better a Rino than a Jackass....
I agree with your father’s counsel.
Including those who get the government they allow to happen by not voting!
