I'll admit that I can't think of any stupid people that I know who have smart kids, but I do know some smart people who have stupid kids.

However, I think we've veered off the true topic a little bit. The academic that was quoted actually was referring to socioeconomic class, rich vs. "working class", rather than smart vs. stupid. In that case, I could attest to knowing some extremely intelligent people who grew up on the lower end of the economic scale. Of course, their parents were hardly stupid.
