Congressman Roscoe Bartlett says high oil prices have prompted him to drop his longtime opposition to oil and natural gas drilling in a national wildlife refuge in Alaska.
The Maryland Republican has co-sponsored a bill that would allow for oil and gas production on part of the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Actually, I disagree. We don’t currently have a supply problem. If we did, then your comment would be valid. (Remember the gas lines in the 70s? THAT was a supply problem.)
Right now the problem is speculators pushing the price up on *projected* supply problems. We could very easily SPOOK the speculators by aggressively pursuing domestic production. If we suddenly said “ANWR - OK; Gulf Coast - OK; Bakken formation - massive tax breaks for anyone who can develop that potential...” the price would drop very suddenly.
This is a bubble I think we can burst if we can just apply the right prick.
So... all you “pricks” in Congress who are holding back on domestic exploration and development - STOP.
There was an article several weeks ago that I thought about posting that said Alaska was going to allow drilling on state land adjacent to ANWR and with slant drilling technology would be able to extract oil from ANWR and they would not have to pay royalties to the Federal govt because of a law they cited in the article so the congressman’s new stance may have something to do with that. On the other hand, the new ruling on polar bears may allow the congressman to eat his cake and have it too since drilling may now be barred because of the bears. He would get to come out in support of something that can’t happen anyway. Just my cynical mind working here.
It is just sad that any American chooses foreigners ( especially ones who would see us all dead ) over fellow Americans when it comes to securing standard of living and security. Darn right traitorous in my book.
It won’t take that long actually. The day Congress approves drilling on American soil it will cause the cost per barrel to plummet from that day forth asnd those who specualted will be going to Congress looking for redress for their speculation losses.
I'm happy that Rep. Bartlett (my own rep) has finally seen the light on this issue. To be fair though, he is quite conservative with regards to other issues, especially illegal immigration, so I wouldn't go so far as to insult the man with the "RINO" label.
Not really and that’s a silly argument. The market alloocates the oil far better than some govt interference ever could. For instance, the oil from Prudhoe bay is mostly shipped to Asia because shipping costs make that more efficient. Be careful when you hear some politician spouting populist nonsense. It’s usually detrimental.

Drilling on American soil is permitted in lots of places.
And don't kid yourself that ANWR is Saudi Arabia.

The economic ignorance of Americans is astounding.
My criteria for RINO is that the republican in question shows decided Dem, or stupid, qualities. In this case thinking that drilling in ANWR would hurt Caribou or make a difference in our reserve capacity is just stupid. Anyone in the US who thinks that drilling for more oil, in Alaska or offshore or anywhere that oil lies, is detrimental to the US is either a Dem or someone so stupid as to warrent the RINO label whether they are a politician of just an average voter. I hope I have cleared up what my interpretation of a RINO is. Your Senator qualifies to be a RINO in the stupid category.

I’m more interested in opening up exploration off the east and west coasts than Alaska.
Ask yourself: Does this make sense?
There's no point in incurring higher shipping costs than are necessary to get oil from wellhead to refinery.
On that basis, it is certainly conceivable that a significant amount of Alaskan oil might be shipped to Japan. But it would be well short of 80%, since most of the Alaskan oil would be shipped to refineries on the West Coast (a few of which were built for the express purpose of refining Alaskan oil).
Domestic oil production at other locations is always closer to stateside refineries than overseas refineries (though some might be shipped to Puerto Rico for refining, then shipped back to the U.S.).
Shortly after completion of the TAPline, I believe a majority of Alaskan oil was, in fact, shipped to Japan -- because there was a market for it there and the California refineries were awash with California oil.

The caller was almost certainly misinformed -- probably because of reports in the seventies on Japan taking most of the Alaskan oil. Now, we consume far more and produce far less. Very little would be shipped elsewhere.
Greenies make me crazy. We have oil platforms off the Louisiana coast. Guess where the best fishing is - yep, by the oil rigs. And, the ones inland have never caused any trouble. In fact, the deer cross over the pipelines and hunters know this. Wild life is abundant. But the sheeple keep buying into the green agenda like it is their salvation or something. Loons - all of them!
Well, do we do it today or tomorrow???next year? next decade??? If we’d done it ten years ago (as we should’ve) we’d see results today...
