Governor Deval Patrick has decided against taking action to allow illegal immigrants to pay resident tuition and fees at state colleges and universities this fall, an administration official said yesterday, crushing advocates who were counting on the governor to deliver on a pledge to support the students.
Earlier this year, Patrick said he was considering ways to offer illegal immigrants in-state rates, such as issuing a regulation, adding that it would be "the right thing to do."
The governor declined to comment yesterday, but an administration source who spoke on condition of anonymity said Patrick decided that there were "significant legal impediments" to that approach. The governor will still support legislation on the matter, but on Beacon Hill the issue is widely viewed as dead this session.
The decision is a blow to church pastors, school counselors, and advocates from Lawrence to Springfield, who had pressured Patrick to act before high school graduations in the next few weeks. Now several hundred seniors are again facing college tuition and fees that are more than double the resident rates, as high as $21,900 a year.

How do you give "resident" tuition to someone who, by definition, is not only NOT a citizen but a criminal?
Damn those "significant legal impediments" that get in the way of good liberals who know that it's ALWAYS "the right thing to do."
“Advocates had hoped that Patrick, who often touts his own background as a civil rights advocate whose life was transformed by education, would build support for a relatively small group of students. The Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation estimated that if students could pay in-state rates, as many as 600 illegal immigrants would enroll in college a year, out of 160,000 in the public system, bringing in about $2.5 million in tuition and fees. The group estimated that only about 100 such students were enrolled in 2006.”
“’We had hoped that the governor would honor his commitments and his promises to make education access fair for all Massachusetts students,’ said Shuya Ohno, spokesman for the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition. ‘He understood that it was a question of fairness. What he couldn’t articulate is that it actually makes money for the state.’”
“Governor Deval Patrick has decided against taking action to allow illegal immigrants to pay resident tuition...”
He’s obviously a xenophobic racist.
“Opponents say the state should not make concessions for illegal immigrants, while advocates say charging them prohibitive rates for college wastes the money that the state and communities have spent on their schooling.”
This is liberal logic at its finest. In other words, we took money from people who work and wasted it on education for criminal aliens, so let’s cut them a break on college too or else it was a waste in the first place?
If Senator Kennedy resigns soon, look for the Governor to pull the ripcord and appoint himself.
Massachusetts Politics: Coming to all fifty states at the federal level, starting in mid-January ‘09!
The solution is obvious to anyone but a liberal, don't allow them access to college at all. They are not here legally, they are breaking the law, they need to go home. I guess liberals can't grasp the concept of rule of law.
If I’d have to pay out of state rates as an American citizen then the GD illegals can pay the same rate since they don’t even belong here and should be deported.
The "significant legal impediment" is the fact that there is quite specific Federal law on this.

Maybe someone handed Gov. Patrick the smelling salts and he woke up to the federal statutes /w regards to knowingly helping illegals and has become a RICOphobic Realist????
I think he realized that in an election year, even in Mass., this will go over like a lead brick with the voters.
Here in California, only illegals that are Hispanic get in state tuition.

His life was transformed by education, all right - but not the way he means.
Massachusetts has produced a generation of morons who are now voting. Without them, Coupe Deval would be in the Dreaded Private Sector, without a doubt.
“What he couldnt articulate is that it actually makes money for the state.”
That’s a blatant lie. Illegals cost states overall more than they bring in with tax or tuition revenues.
Funny, isn't it, that this is approximately the same in-state tuition as Penn State? We pay our damn taxes here and it is a good share of our income, skimmed right off our gross with far fewer deductions at the state level than at the fereal level.
Still, I couldn't afford to send my kids (all legal citizens) to Penn State. They all ended up going to much cheaper out of state colleges. Let the illegals in Massachusetts do the same. Are there no colleges in Mexico?
