In Response To: OLMERT TO PELOSI: US SHOULD IMPOSE NAVAL BLOCKAGE ON IRAN (IZAKOVIC) Geopolitical Diary: An Iranian Oil Mystery

May 16, 2008 0200 GMT

Iran has booked a supertanker that can store up to 270,000 tons of crude oil for up to 90 days. Iran already has more than 28 million barrels of oil floating in tankers outside its main export terminal in the Persian Gulf. Something is wrong with this picture.

Please excuse this dubious sounding source. This was reported on Fox news last night but it is interesting that it is being reported almost no where.;

It makes no sense. They have no refineries, so hoarding oil won’t help them. They need to unload it.

Maybe they have a secret deal with Obama to drive up the price of oil in advance of the election. Did Obama fly to Paris to meet secretly with Iranian officials recently?

A couple of the energy newsletters have mentioned this. It was also listed in a morning article in the Fort Worth, TX paper. The suggestion was that Iran was simply out of storage.

Hmmmm ..?? An oil tanker .. makes a great target for a smart bomb.

But .. we wouldn’t want to do that .. because the oil would harm the ocean. It’s better to wait until Iran sets their hounds loose in America.

Besides, if we ruin their oil .. what will America do for oil ..?? Oh yeah, we don’t get our oil from Iran.

As much as I despise Iran, they can do what ever they want to do with their oil. If they want to leave it in the ground, or store it in tankers, it’s belongs to them until they sell it for whatever price they can get for it.

“OLMERT TO PELOSI: US SHOULD IMPOSE NAVAL BLOCKAGE ON IRAN”

Pelosi is meddling illegally in diplomatic affairs again.

Considering the cost per day of a supertanker this makes no sense. I doubt it true.

I also heard it’s the thick nasty variety of oil. No customers for it?

It's good to be skeptical but see Eric's #4 post.

I'm thinking more like, easy to commandeer. 27 million barrels would round out the strategic reserves real nicely.

So they’re filling a bunch of supertankers with it and letting them sit until someone is forced to buy it just to get access to the supertanker so they can load it with desirable oil.

It’s either smart or foolish depending on how much it costs them and whether or not there will be a backlash from the owners of the supertankers. My guess is that as long as they’re being paid the owners of the tankers don’t care whether they move or sit.

Once out of the ground there are always buyers for it. They may be balking at the price they’re getting. What is shown on the news is not what the producers actually get. For this thick crap far from it, maybe as low as half. This is the problem with a lot of Venezuelan oil too.

No doubt... But even the heaviest discounted crude is marching upward in value everyday. If you don’t sell today, sell tomorrow for more $.

Tried to find that story in the Star-Telegram but could not.

It is strange for Iran to be hoarding all that oil. My only thought is to perhaps drive up the price.
