TOKYO - When Yosuke the parrot flew out of his cage and got lost, he did exactly what he had been taught recite his name and address to a stranger willing to help.
Police rescued the African grey parrot two weeks ago from a neighbor's roof in the city of Nagareyama, near Tokyo. After spending a night at the station, he was transferred to a nearby veterinary hospital while police searched for clues, local policeman Shinjiro Uemura said.
He kept mum with the cops, but began chatting after a few days with the vet.
"I'm Mr. Yosuke Nakamura," the bird told the veterinarian, according to Uemura. The parrot also provided his full home address, down to the street number, and even entertained the hospital staff by singing songs...

Cute story. I have a daughter who lives near the junction of the RR line to Nagareyama and Tokyo, so know just where he is talking about.
African Greys are probably the smartest of the parrot family, sort of akin to chimps in the monkey family.

Funny and heartwarming story.

The article failed to mention that the smart a$$ bird also told the vet to call me a cab.

But when they took him to that address, they found, not his owner, but the owner of a female African grey parrot.

The RNC should loan Democrat Party leaders a grey parrot for a couple of months and then see what the feathered recorder has got to say !!!

Africa greys are smart little critters.
my parents have an Amazon. Not as smart as the greys, but very entertaining. A little creepy when she injects appropriate comments into conversation.

Thanks for the ping!
I tried to teach a Cockatoo in a pet store my name and address so if someone purchased him he’d come to me but alas...*L*
African Greys can have amazing vocabularies, and some have said that they communicate more than just merely memorize and “parrot” back words.

Greys are very smart, and yes they can “communicate” , besides just repeating.

Lovely bird, the African Grey. Beautiful plumage!
It was a matter of time before someone posted this. First!!

I watched a Discovery channel special on African Greys that said they could learn something like 600 words or more, and that they have the intelligence of a 2-3 year old? That is amazing.

My wife had a friend who owned a parrot and a dog names “Rosebud.” She came home early one day and herd the parrot taunting the dog. “Rosebud, wanno go outside?”
