New Zealand police are on the trail of a woman who is alleged to have helped a sick Aucklander die in return for a fee.
Right-to-die campaigners have made a complaint to police about an American calling herself Susan Wilson. They believe she flew into New Zealand late last year and gave life-terminating drugs to a woman who was battling depression but not terminally ill, and walked away $12,000 better off.
Dignity New Zealand spokeswoman Lesley Martin says it highlights an urgent need to work towards a just and legal process so people who want to end their lives can do so legitimately. Ms Martin is disgusted someone might be taking money for assisting with suicides. Ms Martin says if random strangers assist in deaths and the sick person changes their mind, it becomes murder. Ms Martin fears what the American woman has done could damage rational debate on the need for right-to-die laws.
lesley Martin says the longer politicians ignore the issue, the more they become part of the problem.
So, killing someone who is depressed is just fine, but you can't charge them a fee.
