Obama, under fire for attracting praise and support for his presidential run from the terrorist group Hamas, spoke to Atlantic Monthly at length about his views of the Middle East.
Asked if he thought Israel represented a drag on America's reputation overseas, Obama said: "No, no, no. But what I think is that this constant wound, that this constant sore, does infect all of our foreign policy. The lack of a resolution to this problem provides an excuse for anti-American militant jihadists to engage in inexcusable actions, and so we have a national-security interest in solving this, and I also believe that Israel has a security interest in solving this because I believe that the status quo is unsustainable. I am absolutely convinced of that, and some of the tensions that might arise between me and some of the more hawkish elements in the Jewish community in the United States might stem from the fact that Im not going to blindly adhere to whatever the most hawkish position is just because thats the safest ground politically."

I agree, he isn’t saying Israel is the sore - but he is absolutely ridiculously too vague about potential solutions. He cannot just proclaim that the “status quo” is unacceptable without proposing some solutions - and his lack of conviction in this regard is alarming.
As I said in my post above, BHO needs to declare if he agrees with Bush or not. So far all he has done is decry the Bush comments as an attack, but he hasn’t said what he thinks need be done. Does he suggest Israel start negotiating with Hezbullah and Hamas? Or does he think Hezbullah and Hamas ideology are vile and wrong and thus incapable of reason?
The electorate must hold BHO’s feet to the fire on this and many other issues. He cannot be allowed to skate along on frozen platitudes through November. So I agree we shouldn’t twist his comments because that is a red herring that only gets him off the hook as most people will see that he wasn’t calling Israel a “constant sore”. He needs to explain what is wrong with the status quo and how he proposes to change it.
And McCain can’t let President Bush do his campaigning for him.
Jimmy Carter, Obama, The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, and the UN would not like my solution one iota crumb.
