Sen. Kennedy falls ill; taken to Boston hospital by helicopter

HYANNIS -- U.S. Senator Edward M. Kennedy was rushed by ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital this morning after falling ill at the Kennedy compound in Hyannisport.

Hyannis fire responded to the compound after a call was made around 8:30 a.m. It's unclear what Kennedy's medical condition is, but after he spent almost two hours in the emergency room a decision was made to transfer him to Mass General Hospital in Boston.

Kennedy, 76, was placed on a stretcher and wheeled out to the MedFlight helicopter around 10:15 a.m. where it took off from Barnstable Municipal Airport.

The Kennedy family is preparing to host the annual Best Buddies Challenge event in Hyannisport this afternoon, which is a fund-raiser for the organization. Best Buddies was founded by Anthony Kennedy Shriver and helps people with intellectual disabilities.

Hundreds are expected to participate in the event, which kicked off this morning with a 100-mile bicycle ride from the Kennedy Library in Boston to Hyannisport.

A concert at the Kennedy compound is scheduled for tonight.

Kennedy has represented Massachusetts in the United States Senate for forty-three years.

He was elected in 1962 to finish the final two years of the Senate term of his brother, Senator John F. Kennedy, who was elected president in 1960.

Since then, Kennedy has been re-elected to seven full terms, and is now the second most senior member of the Senate.

Mod Note: We're watching this thread and are more than happy to hand out suspensions

(CBS/AP)2003 In one of the most pointed Democratic denunciations of the war in Iraq yet, Sen. Edward Kennedy on Thursday called the Bush administration’s case for going to war a fraud “made up in Texas” to give Republicans a political boost.

I certianly don't think so.

MA likes Ted Kennedy. The rest of the country? Not so much.

The average American wouldn't get a pass if some chick dies in their car and they leave the scene of the accident.

I do hope he recovers. He is the best example of dems being able to get away with anything that we have in the Senate.

with the intubation chances are he has a bleed - would not be a situation for tPA anyway. I hope he recovers fully and has a long retirement, but what we know so far doesn’t look good

You got that right. My husband had one a couple of years ago. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.

I hope he's doing well.

My mother had one last year. Her brain was gone when they found her. It took 2 weeks for her body to give up. It was terrible.

What does that mean? That he can’t breathe on his own? Is that consistent with a stroke? Prayers for the Senator.

Boston Globe said his family was summoned to Boston to be with him. It has made the Boston Herald now
“Family, friends and colleagues were closed-mouthed this morning as word of the ailment made its way through political and media circles.”

Some things aren’t about Politics. He is a human soul. We may not like him, but we should respect his humanity and wish him a speedy recovery.

Without a doubt, the death of Ted Kennedy would benefit Obama. There would be much made of the fact that Ted was working hard for Obama right up until his last breath. More comparisons will be made to JFK.

IT would either mean he cannot breathe on his own or his mental status is so bad he cannot protect his own airway.

The other thing it could mean is bleeding on the brain, the patient is often intubated and hyperventilated to reduce swelling on the brain. Either way it is not good if he is indeed intubated, looks that way in the picture.

I remember how bad off his Dad, Joe Kennedy, was after his stroke. Looks like strokes run in the family.
