A former top State Police official who killed himself left behind a detailed suicide note focusing on Attorney General Andrew Cuomo's probe of the Dirty Tricks Scandal and feared an ongoing investigation of ex-Gov. Eliot Spitzer's involvement with prostitutes, The Post has learned.
Recently retired State Police Inspector Gary Berwick, who hung himself in the garage of his home on Thursday, wrote a wide-ranging and sometimes rambling suicide note, sources said.
The letter zeroed in on his close relationship with former acting State Police Superintendent Preston Felton, a key figure in last summer's political espionage scandal who was dumped after Gov. Paterson took office in March, sources said.
The handwritten note was found near the 48-year-old Berwick's body Thursday afternoon in New Windsor, Orange County. It was read by a senior State Police official at the scene, placed in a sealed envelope and spirited to State Police headquarters in Albany, sources said.
Berwick, along with his longtime friend Felton, were both involved in the plot by Spitzer and his top aides to use the State Police to gather purportedly damaging information on alleged misuse of state aircraft by Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno (R-Rensselaer).

Pardon me if I seem suspicious...
Is the lack of curiosity a byproduct of very thorough police work?
The story stinks! It’s shameful. I don’t believe in coincidences, and two or three people related to a sociopathic politician like Gov. Spitzer’s downfall hanging themselves strikes me as too strange!
Of course, the truth may be more forthcoming and the press would be more eager to point out these irregulatities if the former Gov was a Republican.
Suicide by hanging?
Yours truly,
The Woim
Or a park like Vince Foster did...
Hanging, no smoking gun, but perhaps another pattern
“Whats with the hanging.”
As long as you don’t use a gun, it’s OK in NY.
Too many times the first thought is the correct one.
Very true. . .especially for a Party of 'moral relatives'. . .
Wow. People are killing themselves over this? Must be something to it.
We’re only getting the barest details of this sordid story-—there is much, much more beneath the surface. So many laws were broken, it would take 15-20 single-spaced typed pages to list them all.
And then there's this passage late in the Post story:
Berwick, who had headed security details for former Gov. George Pataki and Spitzer, also told friends recently he was "concerned" about another probe ordered by new State Police Superintendent Harry Corbett. That investigation is looking at procedures followed by Spitzer's security team, which allowed the governor to spend time with hookers. The probe is also seeking to find out how the bodyguards missed the FBI surveillance crew at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington that snared Spitzer in a high-priced call-girl ring.
"Gary was concerned about an investigation of what had gone on with Spitzer and the prostitutes and he talked about getting a lawyer to represent him," said a source close to Berwick.
Things that make you go hmmm...
“Moral relatives” are everywhere nowadays, and they know what they hate — anything that reminds them of moral absolutes — but not why, and they know very little in general. Secularism has brought us here; with its own messed-up priorities it nearly forces us to practice relativism in living out our own lives. Healthier societies feel less compelled to entertain viewpoints that give practical advantage to criminals at everyone else’s expense.
Rope needs to be licensed or totally banned. Rope takes far too many lives to be easily available in society. /s
lol/ Meantime, think we may have licensing soon for 'matches'. . .could rope be far behind?
So did Brandy Britton. Hope Pellicano doesn't have any rope handy.
The Dad is a doctrinaire Leftist who lies about it to get elected, but that's the extent of his sleaziness. He's not personally sleazy or slimy.
The son is an underachiever who has a shot at the big prize here, and has no obvious vested interest in helping out Spitzer or anyone connected to him. In fact, since this dirty cop had close ties to Pataki, and since the GOP machine (or what's left of it) in NY was notoriously corrupt, Cuomo junior may have a twofer going here where he comes out of it as the only politician, of either party, with any kind of a reputation.
