NARAL Chooses Obama

A few years ago, the National Abortion Rights Action League, as it was then called, or NARAL for short, changed its name to NARAL Pro-Choice America. The idea, as I understood it, was to put the emphasis on "choice" rather than "abortion."

This week, the organization announced its own choice in the Democratic primary contest, and as best as I can tell, it had absolutely nothing to do with preserving abortion rights and everything to do with their own sense of self-importance. Many women I know who have given generously of their time and efforts and money to the organization over the years are furious, and I don't blame them.

If the issue is choice, and it should be for NARAL Pro-Choice America, there is absolutely no reason to prefer Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton. There's no reason to assume he will stand taller when it comes to legislative efforts to limit abortion rights or outlaw particular procedures.

There's no reason to believe that he will appoint judges who will be more sympathetic to Roe v. Wade or more understanding of the plights of the poor, the young, of women from rural areas and those serving in the military (or married to men who are) and those who discover late in their pregnancies that the babies they very much wanted cannot survive. These are, of course, the women who have been targeted successfully by anti-abortion groups in recent years both in the legislatures, state and federal, and in the courts and for whom access to abortion is an abstract promise rather than a constitutionally guaranteed right.

Obama supports the core values of the democrat party: the vast slaughter of defenseless babies

After years of sorting through the craziness of politics, I came up with three simple rules to help rank candidates:

(1) How they line up on the unborn child;

(2) How they line up on the Nation of Israel; and

(3) How they line up on the Lord Jesus Christ.

This is not a perfect measure, but in the long run, I have come to see that when they measure up well on these major issues for me, they seem to do well on many of the minors also.

Dear Susan Ostrich,

Permit me to explain this to you. It’s really simple. Have you ever heard of something called “shameless opportunism”??? That’s all it is. NARAL leadership waited until it was clear who the ‘Rat nominee will be and then jumped on board the bandwagon. It costs them nothing. As you note, even Shrillary will still want to “stand tall” for them in the future. All they want to do is to try to ensure some extra access to a potential Obama WH, and there was really nothing for them to lose.

That makes it a “no-brainer”

Actually, I can see NARAL'S thinking to support BO over Hillary. Granted, it's a sick kind of thinking, but I think I do understand why they are supporting BO. It's a business decision. Plus, it takes the heat off white Democrat pro-abortion politicians and lobbyists.

It's craven, but then.. there it is.
