San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom had barely been on the job a month back in 2004 when he ordered the city to issue marriages licenses to gay and lesbian couples.
Thousands of same-sex partners flocked to City Hall to exchange vows. For four weeks, a steady stream of ceremonies stretched into the night, and lines of eager couples wrapped around the block.
And as quickly as the couples could say, "I do," the scene of women marrying women and men marrying men sparked a nationwide uproar. Proponents called the move bold. Opponents called it defiant and blatantly illegal. People on both sides said Newsom had single-handedly cost Democrats the White House.
But after more than 4,000 same-sex marriage licenses (which ultimately were ruled invalid) and four years, the Republican majority on California's Supreme Court handed Newsom his vindication.
"As California goes," Newsom told hundreds of cheering supporters, "so goes the nation."
For a time, even he was convinced he'd be on the losing end.
The mayor's sources who claimed to have early knowledge of the ruling assured him Thursday morning that the judicial decision he had waited years for would go against same-sex marriage.
"I had absolute confirmation that listed the names of the judges that were for and against it," Newsom said.
City Attorney Dennis Herrera, whose office led the courtroom charge to legalize same-sex marriage after Newsom's decision to grant the marriage licenses, had a defeat speech written and ready to give.

When will he announce that he supports pedophilia and child molestation in legal in SF and California? Also, all drugs are legal, no prison for drug addicts that rob, rape and murder. What a paradise!!!!
Way to be the champion of less than 40% of the population!!! Hope that works out well in the next Gov election queerboy.
When two angels come knocking on your door, have your gas tank full and your suitcases in hand.
In his effin’ dreams. This issue is toxic to the Democrats and they know it. Let’s see how that amendment fares in November before Gavin starts planning to run for Governor.
And Ronald George has an affirmation vote coming up in two years. If I were him, I’d retire before the voters kick me off the bench.
I’m not sure which is more arrogant — Newsom in violating the law and issuing “marriage licenses” or the court in deciding to altar one of the foundational institutions of our civilization.
As far as “as California goes....” is concerned, I’m pretty sure there are plenty of people between the Atlantic Ocean and the California line who are going to give him a fight. I, for one, don’t have a taste for the kind of fascism that has evidently taken over in California, not just on this issue, but on others.
Not to mention that this is an issue on which two groups the Democrats heavily rely on - Hispanics and Blacks - have expressed complete and utter distaste for. And Nancy Pelosi’s comments yesterday will definitely be used by her conservative/moderate challenger to rally voters of both groups in her District.
For the same reason we never see the end result of the right to choose.
Such are the “rights” of the left. Work is freedom.
Arbeit macht frei.
I am watching Herr Newsome’s political career. From the moment he popped on the scene I told my wife this man has a soul of evil.
The picture posted speaks a thousand words.
His arms seem unusually long.
They don’t call him “Any Twosome” Newsom for nothing.
