WEDNESDAY, May 14 (HealthDay News) -- A daily aspirin can control prehypertension, but only if it is taken at bedtime, a Spanish study shows.
An aspirin taken every morning didn't lower the blood pressure of prehypertensive people, but the evening regimen did, Dr. Ramon C. Hermida reported Wednesday at the American Society of Hypertension annual meeting, in New Orleans.
A previous study by Hermida, who is director of bioengineering and chronobiology at the University of Vigo, showed the same beneficial effect of bedtime aspirin for people with moderately high blood pressure. The new report is the first study to show the drug's benefit -- although only when taken at night -- with prehypertension, defined as blood pressure just below the 140/90 level. Prehypertension is a known warning sign of future risk of heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular problems.
Why aspirin should do its good work for blood pressure at night but not in the daytime is not clear, Hermida said. Research indicates that it can slow the production of hormones and other substances in the body that cause clotting, many of which are produced while the body is at rest.

Thanks, interesting. As far as I know, however, there’s no such thing as a 100 mg dose. The standard low dose is 81 mg, which my doctor recommends. Looks as if before sleep is the time to take it.
I’d take the 81mg at bedtime and then one 81mg in the AM as well or two 81mg at bedtime. No advil, ibuprofen or other NSAIDs. I’ve had prehypertension for years and have taken the 81mg in the AM. I started taking it at bedtime and my BP came down almost immediately. INcrediable considering the dose is so small. Powerful drug aspirin.
I take a 325 mg tab at bedtime myself (enteric coated).
2 fingers of bourbon thins the blood sufficiently, too.
To each, his own.
Worth a shot. I mean the aspirin.
I think the key is to take the BP frequently during the day and night and keep a record and see what dose works. Even try it in the daytime also. The ASA was always recommended so as to thin out the blood. This study seems to indicate that it has vasodilation effect that lowers the BP. But it may have other effects as well. I think that together with red wine and some Folic Acid is a good combo.
Unless you’re a bleeder. Asperin makes it hard to stop wounds such as nose bleeds. It’s not for everyone.
I suffer a lot of headaches and take a lot of aspirins. When I take an aspirin before bedtime, I wake up the next morning feeling drained, due to its blood thinning qualities I’m sure.
I cut my finger on a paper cutter at work last week, and the darned finger bled profusely for an entire day. I probably should have had a stitch or two. It would stop when I put a Band-aid on it, but the minute I took off the bandage, it would start bleeding again.
I always worry that if,God forbid, I’m ever in a serious accident, that I would bleed to death from a wound that most people would quickly recover from.
As far as taking Ibuprofin or Tylenol, they don’t do me a bit of good, especially when I’m having a migraine.
I was taking asperin for preventative purposes and almost died from a nose bleed. I lost nearly half my blood supply as it bled continuously for almost 3 days. I NEVER take asperin for anything ever. Some can tolerate it, some cannot. If I were you, I would stay away from asperin.
As far as taking Ibuprofin or Tylenol, they dont do me a bit of good, especially when Im having a migraine.
My wife has horrible headaches too. There are some perscription drugs for migraines that work for her sometimes. We have found that coffee or coca cola can bring them on.
In other news, not eating garbage all day is good for lowering BP too!
Correct. 81mg is not much. It’s like a baby aspirin. Some people with nasal polyps are allergic to aspirin. If it were discovered today you’d probably need a prescription for it.
