Bush's comments about appeasement reverberated across the U.S. campaign trail, offering a new platform for Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) to sharpen their lines of attack.
In the speech, Bush warned that the United States must not negotiate with Iran or radical groups such as Hamas.
"Some seem to believe we should negotiate with the terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along," Bush told the Israeli lawmakers. "We have heard this foolish delusion before. As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: 'Lord, if only I could have talked to Hitler, all of this might have been avoided.' We have an obligation to call this what it is -- the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history."
Democrats angrily called the comment a veiled shot at Obama, who has advocated dialogue with Iran and Syria, but not the Palestinian group Hamas.

McCain would probably leave the grownups in charge.
How is Obama a decndant of slaves? His father was from Kenya nad his mother a white woman from Kansas?
Yesterday, wittle Cwissy Maffews was ranting about how: “Chamberlain signed away half of Czechoslovakia to Hitler; THAT was appeasement. THAT’S DIFFERENT from just talking to the bad guys. When we TALK, we’re not giving away anything. So it’s not appeasement. So THERE (sticks out tongue).”
Now, Cwissy, when you talk with terrorists and rogues, you are treating them as equals. That is giving them something, the very thing that they want. Prestige, recognition, encouragement, aid and comfort, credibility in the eyes of others whom they’d love to recruit to stand alongside themselves. Something that has been withheld from them all along, but now, because you are talking with them, they receive in abundance. Oh yes, Cwissy, you are giving away something, alright. Why do you think we don’t give them that recognition, up front?
Now, on the other hand, obviously, SECRET talks are swirling about all the time. You just can’t give these types the vainglory of having any talks at or above the official diplomatic level. Good grief.
Agreed,big time.
It’s fine and freakin’ dandy when the Rats besmirch and berate Bush (comparing him to Hitler, for instance)on a regular basis, and all is quiet on the media front-of course. But let Bush state the painfully obvious and it’s Armageddon. All this little exercise has done is to open up the ugly stinking can of worms that is the liberal ideology-capitulate,appease,yada,yada.It’s brought to light what conservatives have known forever.
All dhimmirats are cowardly appeasers.
They just don’t like it when light is shown on their cowardice - especially when that light comes from historical precedent.
Its times when there is stuff on PMSNBC like you described that I become a champion of McCain because th bias is so bad.
And she also likes to practice international diplomacy as the shadow (British term for opposition party) Secretary of State. Nancy and Jimmuh should have had their passports revoked.
Everytime dems call mccain “Bush III”, the response should be “vs. Carter II?”.
ha!
Even if it WAS a veiled shot at Obama,( and it wasn’t!) who gives a rip?
It’s TRUE!
Anyone who’s been paying attention for the last 30 years knows the United States stated policy is NO negotiation with terrorists.
Obamarama would change all that in a heartbeat.
Let GWB say whatever he damn pleases. Bush isn’t running for re-election, so what has he got to lose?
Obamarama can take it any way he likes.
Whatta punk.
Can it be used to fuel cars?
“Hes not a descendant of slaves.”
I know that.
I was putting myself in the mindset of white liberals, who believe that, by default, ALL blacks should get a free pass.
Re-entering that sick perspective:
Whether they are directly related to slaves or not, the taint of that long-dead institution reaches its nasty, oppressive, discriminatory hand across the ages to oppress and hold back all people of color to this day.
Besides, unenlightened, knuckle-dragging conservatives would have all blacks back in shackles if it weren’t for the efforts of progressive, enlightened, inclusive liberals...
Nice post.
Bush’s statement about appeasement is an “inconvenient truth”. Every time you point out an aspect of reality that the Democrats don’t like or don’t want to deal with, they call it “dirty”. These people are like children in the schoolyard, and they shouldn’t be governing this country.
Pres Polar Bear Bush is back in the good graces of FReepers for a nanosecond.
“Descendents of slaves, continually get a MAJOR, across-the-board pass”
Except that Obama is descended from a white American mother and an economist from Kenya, neither of whom had slaves in their ancestry.
In any event, your ancestry should be a non-factor in determining whether you’d make a President.
“...claiming that Bushs attack on Obama is a winner for the dem ..”
We’ll see how the Jewish voting bloc reacts. Obambi’s left wing views, amateurish babbling, not to mention the anti-semitism permeating the left wing blogs, have to give them pause.
I see some political strategy here. The Obama camp fell right into the trap.
McCain needs the story to be the WOT, it is all has has to differentiate himself from the Democrats.
If he can get the story off the economy, and issues at home, he can refocus all the attention on what is Obamas weakest issue.
Obama camp sure is dumb. They themselves have now made it the issue.
Oh, ok, gotcha. Just like whites who are not the descendents of slave owners still benefit from a racist oppressive caste system and thus owe reparations.
I suspect that not long into either a McCain or Obama Presidency GWB will be viewed with much nostalgia around these parts.
