Bob Barr Enters the Race
Townhall.com ^ | May 15, 2008 | William Rusher

Former Republican congressman Robert Barr of Georgia recently announced he is running for president as a Libertarian. This is a formidable development, and it's by no means out of the question that Barr could attract enough otherwise conservative voters to defeat John McCain and put Barack Obama in the White House.

Of course, Obama has his own problems with possible rivals on the left side of the political spectrum. That hardy perennial Ralph Nader has already made it clear that he intends to run, and while he may be old news, even a poor showing by Nader on Election Day might be enough to tip the scales to McCain in a close-fought election. But Barr is much the fresher face, and it is only prudent to assume that he would attract more votes than Nader.

"......conservatives will turn out to vote for McLame to insure the Rats don't win."

Keep dreaming, LOL. The conservatives are divided and will have little impact at election time. This forum alone shows a goodly percentage that won't vote for MC, or will vote third party.....or will stay home.

The reality is that the continually-rising cost of food and fuel, the draining of retirement money and other savings, the bankruptcies and the fears of going broke.....or even getting by......will trump the standard idea of parties and candidates. The populace will vote for CHANGE in November no matter what the change is to. Especially if gas is ten bucks a gallon.

The GOP is naively hoping to win by default because of the inadequacies of Hillbama which is a horrendous position to be coming from in the first place. The usual wrong thinking by the GOP. The lumpen masses will vote their pocketbooks as they always do, and the fine points between Hillbama, McCain, Nader, Barr and Mickey Mouse will mean nothing to them on election day.....if they can afford to drive to the polls in the first place.

“Bob Barr supports the war on drugs ...”

If true, he won’t get the LP nomination.

No chance to win, huh? mmmm How about I learn more about Barr, if I like him, push him a lot and come November, see if he has a snowball’s chance. I’ll have time to hold my nose for McPain if necessary.

Bob Barr is not going to get any votes. I guess the over/under for him might be Buchanan’s numbers in 2000, and I pick the under.
Barr is going to get a lot of votes, and I, for one, am happy to see him in the race.

Give it a rest, that is a pack of lies . He is a moderate republican. He is anti abortion, pro military, pro military, anti taxes, and anti socialized medicine. The MccCain haters are just as crazy as Barr . Your sad tactic to lies long enough about someone so that people will believe it is a Moveon.org/Soros radical leftist strategy.

I doubt all these naysayers are on "our" side. Check out Daily Kos and Democrat underground site. You'll see the same arguments there as being spouted here on FR.

Be not discouraged by all the doom and gloom being preached here.

Interesting you said “pro military” twice since that is his claim to fame. Anti-taxes? He voted against the tax cuts. Anti-socalized medicine? He is promoting yet another government plan for health care. McCain is a “conservative” Democrat AT BEST. Most likely he’s just a pro-war liberal. There is no Republican alive who should be for open borders, amnesty, “global warming cap & trade”, taxing the rich etc.. McCain is no Republican.

I saw the Barr interview as well. I disagree with the Buchannan/Barr/Paul brand of conservatism that misinterprets President Washington's warning about foreign entanglements. President Washington was clearly warning about the US getting involved in European feudal and colonial boundaries. Europe was in arms during his presidency and he resisted assisting the French in the Coalition campaigns. If the warnings were as broad as the Buchannan wing suggests, the Marines would not have landed on the shore of Tripoli and the Monroe Doctrine would not have been official foreign policy.

I understood what Barr was saying about Iran and nation building. We need to support democratic and free market elements in and out of Iran. WE HAVE FAILED AT THIS APPOARCH. As far as Iraq, the cat is out of the bag and you can’t change in mid-stream. Finish the job. Plus the US being in Iraq surrounds Iran and makes the “diplomatic” nation building easier!

Barr? Conservative? You do know he's an ACLU member, right? You know, the folks who represented NAMBLA?

He collaborated with the ACLU on Data and privacy issues, I have no problem with that. He also has a 98% rating with the American Conservative Union during his time in congress.

From what I know of Linder, Barr lost to a better candidate.

Right now, the GOP and the DNC are vying for the ABSOLUTE worst candidate possible.

How about we choose someone who ISN'T a lesser of evils, but someone actually on the "good" side of things?

You know... just for a change.

“Barr is a spoiler would could easily take enough votes from McPain to give the election to Obama.”
barr will take votes from some on FR but not in the rest of the country. The guy is on the board of the aclu and wants to gut the Patriot Act. He is like those fools who stood tall on line while the Nazis were putting them against walls to shoot them. I know barr personally and believe me this is just a stunt to get himself a fix of printers ink.

98% ACU lifetime rating.

Compared to McCain's 82% and current 32% ratings.

benedict arnold would have had a 100% ACU rating. So what? barr is a dangerous little minded fool who thinks we are playing so kind of game here. He wants to “prove” we protect civil rights in America even if it kills us. Let me off. Let me add this he is still with the aclu. Vote for him if you want. It’s still a free country until Jan. 1 2009.

So vote for Juan "Open Borders" McCain then. Capt. Queeg and you seem to have a lot in common. Myopia not the least of which.

If you vote McCain or Obama, you end up with a socialist either way.

Barr is a non-socialist alternative. If that is truly your objective, you'd not be spouting the drivel you are.

Bush is certainly no prize and not at all conservative but would Gore or Kerrey have been better? If you think that voting third party will keep a democrat out you are delusional. A third party will not win, period. The time to get completely behind someone who shares the values of most was six months ago but everyone was factionalized and supporting their single issue candidate, or the one who looked good, or the one who was a righteous preacher. Blindness to what McCain was doing or the democrat crossover votes that went for McCain ensured that nobody good would succeed. The way our primaries are so split ensures that this travesty will happen. Everyone stuck with their favorite instead of making a rational analysis and now everyone is stuck with McCain. Mark my words, an Obama or Clinton in the WH with a 70+ seat advantage in congress will ensure a worse disaster than McCain. If you want to directly contribute to that then fine, snuggle up to those rats and live with the consequences.
