For many conservatives, John McCain is not their favorite Republican. They think he's built a career at their expense, painting them as fools and bigots. They resent his holier-than-thou attitude. And they're not inclined to trust anyone who has been so fawned over by the national media.
Curiously, a lot of liberal Democrats feel the same way about McCain. He isn't their favorite Republican either -- but it's because they know he'll be tough to beat in November. They would have preferred to run against someone more extreme and easier to demonize. That's not John McCain.
first met McCain 10 years ago when I was a working at The Arizona Republic. What I remember is that, in a political climate where so many elected officials -- Republican and Democrat alike -- were wearing themselves out pandering to racists who demanded action on illegal immigration, McCain was one of the few who didn't play that game. In 1998, while Texas Gov. George W. Bush made headlines for earning an impressive 49 percent of the Hispanic vote in his re-election, McCain walked off with an unheard-of 65 percent in his Senate re-election bid. Six years later, he did even better, earning around 70 percent of the Hispanic vote.
Most political observers don't expect McCain to match those numbers in a national election, but half of that -- 35 percent -- is a definite possibility. With that kind of support among Hispanics, McCain could win the White House.
And so Democrats are doing everything they can to distort McCain's record. Some are actually accusing McCain of not doing enough for immigration reform. In fact, they might even try to compare McCain to nativists such as Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., who competed with the Arizona senator for the GOP nomination.

Ruben is better than the great Kreskin, he read my mind.
As has been explained to you umpteen times:
Build the fence.
Enforce the law.
Remove welfare, housing and other attractants.
Remove employment, sanction employers.
Without a reason to be here they will reduce themselves by voluntarily going home. Not only is this the primary solution proposed by Conservatives, IT IS PROVEN TO WORK WHERE APPLIED.
Pro-amnesty liberals on illegal immigration always reveal themselves in the end, when they run out of something else to say, by invariably hauling out this dishonest phoney-baloney straw man.
Great solution! Who can refute that logic?
He doesn't mean it and he won't do it. Look at his long term record.
Are you saying winning primaries by a close margin is “cheating”?
I agree with those measures. I believe eventually that will be done. At State Level, Arizona is leading the way and has achieved some sort of reverse-migration simply by passing tough laws against employers.
That is the best way to do it.
This time around FReepers, we lose.
John McCain could win Hispanic votes by a landslide and it won't help. The man is simply without real support.
Oh he may win the White House, and perhaps we'll hear a collective sigh of relief. That will not last long though. The man has proved on countless occasions that he is unworthy of the position of President.
Anybody who has difficulty making decisions about such an important decision such as their vote for President, probably deserves whomever they get in the Office.
Unfortunately, the rest of us are screwed along with them.
McCain’s character will win Hispanic vote? Ha ha ha. His open border policy will win the Hispanic vote.
No, I am saying that the primaries favor RINOs, and have done so for a very long time.
Then please refrain from comments such as this:
Since no one really knows how to handle it and even True Conservatives are silent about what exact solution applies -The_Republican #38
Such a remark is disingenuous and misinforms. The solution I proposed is the consensus opinion of "True Conservatives", and has been for a long time, as I am sure you know.
“McCain’s Character Will Win Hispanic Support”
Character hell! He’s amnesty boy and everyone knows it!
“Not only is this the primary solution proposed by Conservatives, IT IS PROVEN TO WORK WHERE APPLIED.”
Logical, simple and fair. Laws are laws. Enforce them and the problem will sort itself out.
Lots of people are making LOTS of money, and they are doing it by CHEATING the US taxpayer.
How stupid do you have to be to repeat the obvious mistake of the first amnesty? (McCain raises his hand in the back of the room: “I am! I am!”)
Piss off McCain, you pandering political whore.
Thank you for that well reasoned and thoughtful reply.
