McCain's Character Will Win Hispanic Support
RCP ^ | May 14th, 2008 | Ruben Navarrette

Posted on 05/14/2008 10:16:21 AM PDT by The_Republican

For many conservatives, John McCain is not their favorite Republican. They think he's built a career at their expense, painting them as fools and bigots. They resent his holier-than-thou attitude. And they're not inclined to trust anyone who has been so fawned over by the national media.

Curiously, a lot of liberal Democrats feel the same way about McCain. He isn't their favorite Republican either -- but it's because they know he'll be tough to beat in November. They would have preferred to run against someone more extreme and easier to demonize. That's not John McCain.

first met McCain 10 years ago when I was a working at The Arizona Republic. What I remember is that, in a political climate where so many elected officials -- Republican and Democrat alike -- were wearing themselves out pandering to racists who demanded action on illegal immigration, McCain was one of the few who didn't play that game. In 1998, while Texas Gov. George W. Bush made headlines for earning an impressive 49 percent of the Hispanic vote in his re-election, McCain walked off with an unheard-of 65 percent in his Senate re-election bid. Six years later, he did even better, earning around 70 percent of the Hispanic vote.

Most political observers don't expect McCain to match those numbers in a national election, but half of that -- 35 percent -- is a definite possibility. With that kind of support among Hispanics, McCain could win the White House.

And so Democrats are doing everything they can to distort McCain's record. Some are actually accusing McCain of not doing enough for immigration reform. In fact, they might even try to compare McCain to nativists such as Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., who competed with the Arizona senator for the GOP nomination.

You are the best of the McCain supporters here. You make your points respectfully and without insulting people. I commend you as a gentleman.

I can't vote for McCain. My point was, Ruben Navarette is a hispanic media agitator. McCain will not save America. People like him who have no principles, betray their own side, and kiss the Democrats are the reason we're in this soup. McCain would be another Ford. He would continually outrage conservatives and give the Democrats what they want, while continuing to be blamed as a figurehead for everything that goes wrong.

Ford gave us John Paul Stevens on the SC. I see McCain doing the same thing quite easily. I'll vote, but not for him.

‘W’ touched 40s. Yeah, McCain can do it. Hispanics will not go for Black candidate the way they would for Hillary. Take that to the bank.

Obama has already seen McCain's Amnesty and raised it with driver's licenses for illegal aliens.

Here are the Senators who voted against the Cornyn amendment , which would have established a permanent bar for gang members, terrorists, and other criminals looking to snag a shamnesty visa. Republicans underlined:

McCain is the worst GOP candidate in my entire life.
That is why I believe he would lose to Putin himself if he ran.
Take that to the bank. ;)

But it is a shame that there is no real choice at all.

"Character" would be one of the reasons.

How can that be when he possesses no positive attributes of nobility? He is not a man of character. He is a traitor and an opportunist.

However, if McCain plays his cards right he could hang on to Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada. All States that Obama feels he can flip into his column.

Between Bush and McCain, McCain will play hell just keeping a hold on traditional red states- He has so thoroughly pissed off the average Republican voter so completely that Republican turnout will be lacking to say the least.

As to picking up any blue states, he is selling the same liberalism as Obama and Clinton- Why would they vote for him when either of the others is a known 'true believer'?

McCain is a waste of time. The only chance of success (and coattails) is to rally behind one of the 3rd or independent candidates.

Maybe McCain needs the gang member vote.

The choice is there. Alan Keyes is as rock-ribbed a Conservative as anyone could hope to have. If you cannot support him, there is Bob Barr.

When he wins, don’t claim credit for it, that’s my only request. Don’t say that his VP choice made the difference, or Obama was so weak that McCain was default candidate. Just step back and say you were wrong, and McCain has broad appeal and he won fair and square.

>Alan Keyes is as rock-ribbed a Conservative ...

I agree.
I should have said that there is no real choice in either major party.

One of those two will win. Makes me depressed...

“There is more than a good chance, McCain gets MAJORITY of Hispanic support.”

Nope, McPanderer’s still losing them, and ticking off who knows how many average Americans in the process. Rasmussen, May 10th: “Among Hispanic voters[nationwide], Obama leads 58% to 35%.”

That’s worse than Bush did, BTW.

If Hispanics (however defined) support adultery, Keating Five, backstabbing and waffling, then yes, McCain reflects their character.

That is not necessarily so. There is tons of money out there that has not been spent. There are political allegiances that are left wanting.

If there was ever a time to lift up a conservative dark horse, now is the time.

ROTFL! You have nothing to fear in your, uh, request.Once people realize that they voted for this screwball and democrat collaborator they sure won't want to take any credit for it.

I believe that we should make that, uh, request of you. If McCain wins and starts screwing you over, do not gripe, you knew well in advance who he is.

Most of us will have our conscience clear, we aren't going to be told we have no right to complain because we voted for him.

You can't have it both ways.

Please explain to me the EXACT differences between the Obama/Clinton stances on illegal immigration as opposed to McCain’s (and Kennedy’s, as a matter of fact).

McCain is the poster child for amnesty. What worse acts have Obama or Clinton actively pursued in the United States Senate?

Fear mongering is a very poor method of building support, especially when fear of the cobra is supposed to make handling the rattlesnake so much more attractive.

If Obama is the Democrat nominee, as seems likely, then it will be quite interesting to watch the news media try to explain McCain’s apparent strength among Hispanic voters solely in terms of his “moderate” immigration policies - especially since the Dems will certainly bash him for being “anti-immigrant”. The truth, as you’ve alluded to, is that there is a lot of bad blood between blacks and Hispanics in this country, and that could make a difference in states like Florida and New Mexico. OTOH, if Obama picks Bill Richardson as a running mate, that advantage might be negated.

What many miss is the McCain strategy. The biggest issue of the campaign is Barack Hussein Obama. Not immigration, not McCain-Feingold and so forth. Charm, Charisma and guilty racial consciences are going to meet the persona, problems and experience of Obama.

The exact main difference is that McCain was simply tackling a reality and problem that needs to be resolved - 12million+ illegals who are already present in the Country.

Since no one really knows how to handle it and even “True Conservatives” are silent about what exact solution applies (rounding up 12 million is sort of a problem and bad imagery to say the least, not to mention the logistics and chaos created both in US, Mexico, and other Countries).

McCain’s mistake was as he acknowledged in his speech to CPAC that first we have to gain people’s confidence in securing the Border. He means it and he will. That’s why he put the other bill on back burner.

On the other hand, who ever managed to stay awake during the Obama-Hillary debate in Texas, would know that *whatever* is in LaRaza’s agenda, they both enthusiastically supported it, with thunderous applause to boot. From Virtual fence, to Driver Liscences and Credit Cards, to funding for Bi-Lingual Education, to refusing to acknowledge English as official Language, to College Education and Free Healtchare for Illegals and not only not doing anything about Sanctuary Cities, but giving them even more protection.

So yeah, McCain is not like some extreme Radio Talk show guys, who find it easy to scream and yell because they don’t have the actual burden of making things happen. So McCain doesn’t qualify as Conservative in those Verbahideen’s eyes because he doesn’t resort to xenophobic rhetoric, which he can’t afford politically anyway.

So essentially McCain has a Verbal Gun put to his head by extremist talk radio. They want to force him to say things they like to hear, knowing fully well that none of those ideas can actually pass in Congress or ever get implemented. They also know that if he does that he would be committing Political Suicide.

They don’t care. If Republicans get wiped out in Congress and McCain loses 66-35%, after parroting extremist rhetoric, the Verbahideen would proudly beat their chest and smile at their glorious achievement.

You needn't worry. I will never claim nor want credit for that POS.

[...] McCain has broad appeal and he won fair and square.

Fair and square my hiney. That ship sailed with the primaries.
