Source: Huckabee Tops McCain's Veep List
US News ^ | May 12, 2008 | James Pethokoukis

"Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas and defeated contender for the GOP presidential nomination, is currently at the top of John McCain's short list for a running mate. At least that's the word from a top McCain fundraiser and longtime Republican moneyman who has spoken to McCain's inner circle. The fundraiser is less than thrilled with the idea of Huckabee as the vice presidential nominee, and many economic conservatives—turned off by the populist tone of Huckabee's campaign and his tax record as governor—are likely to share that marked lack of enthusiasm."

Huckabee is endorsed by the National Education Association. What else needs to be said?

OMG. That's the clincher for me.

McCain needs someone who is a fiscal and social conservative. Huck doesn’t fit the bill.

I like Huckabee and I would happily have voted for him for Prez but I don’t think McCain should nominate any of his former opponents.

Huckabee, if he were not a former opponent, would meet a lot of qualifications, though. McCain needs somebody who is somewhat of an unknown quantity but more conservative (and younger) than he. A state governor would be excellent, because Senators rarely get elected and all three (well, at some point it will be only two) of those running are Senators, so having a state governor as VP would be a distinguishing feature and a positive one.

I’d usually say this has to be a fun MSM spin of hope for the messed up situation going on over in the Dim camp, but after everything we’ve seen and heard this election year this wouldn’t surprise me. Surely those around McCain aren’t this stupid? Maybe by putting it out there they are testing it out? If so let’s hope they can see it’s a resounding HELL NO! You don’t even have to do some skewed poll to find out what the results would be if this ticket showed up on the ballot. It’s going to be hard enough to vote for McCain which I’m finally coming around to. Throw Gomer up there and I can’t do it.

Wonder how many decades it will take for the GOP to get its act together?

I'm starting to think that the GOP really likes the "wandering in the wilderness" thing.

After all the old go-along-to-get-along doesn't affect their paychecks one way or t'other.

Unless the race is very tight in November, I’m finding harder and harder to come up with a reason to vote at all.

Oh, please find somebody conservative in a third-party to vote for--or write in. That would have more impact than a no-show, IMO. No-shows in 2006, which we may look back on with relative fondness in November, didn't seem to get anyone's attention.

Unless McCain finds a strong fiscal conservative with a “C” or better in high school science (I am not holding my breath) my vote is write-in Thomas Sowell.

Sorry to report. But i saw Ollie North in Orlando about a month ago and he is opposed to drilling for domestic oil and natural gas.

He is a true patriot but his notions on economics, energy and science are way off.

Good suggestion. You (actually Sowell) persuaded me.

There is this really disturbing thing on Free Republic. There are way to many people that think being gun-carrying, anti-abortion, Christian is what it takes to be a conservative. They are actually populists. They show up with tinfoil hats on most of the “oil” threads.

I disagree about the “gun-carrying.” It’s been said before, but the 2nd Amendment is the reset button on the Vista system. I don’t see how we can have a Republic (if we do still have one) without it.

I'm not too codswalloped at this time about a potential Huckleberry selection for VP as it's historically been routine to run up a number of possible veep names on the national flagpole to see if anyone salutes.

Obviously, few here are saluting Huckleberry's name, including me. I'm going to email the McCain campaign to let him know how I feel. Just discussing this potential suicidal move by McCain among ourselves is futile.

These are traditionalist conservatives — which fits the American definition of conservative.

That being said McCain can find many conservatives out there who are quite as wacko as the Huckster. Personally, I’d like to see Romney get the nod.

If conservatives fail to get behind McCain and work their tails off to get him elected.
