GOP Stunned By Loss in Mississippi

In a major blow to national Republicans, a Mississippi congressional seat that once voted for President Bush by a twenty-five point margin elected a Democrat on Tuesday. Prentiss County Chancery Clerk Travis Childers beat out Republican candidate Greg Davis, the mayor of Southaven, by a 54%-46% margin, a spread that several Republican strategists on Capitol Hill characterized as a startling wake-up call for a party in dire straits.

Voters cast ballots for the fourth time in three months for the seat, vacated when Republican Roger Wicker was appointed to fill the remainder of Senator Trent Lott's term. After winning the primary and the runoff election, Childers came within 410 votes of winning the first round of the special election against Davis on April 22, beating the Republican by a 49%-46% margin.

“Will the GOP main plank continue to be: “a new tone” and “reaching across the aisle”, and “extending our hand”?”

Don’t forget Cap-and-Trade economics! We must save the planet!

It is all due to leadership at the RNC, there is none.

With gasoline at $4.00+/gallon and Exxon announcing billions in profits, the Rockefeller wing of the party positioned the GOP for a Waterloo come November.

The average working citizen is going to blame the GOP, who can blame him.

After the democrats are through, there will be very little GOP influence in DC, the country will be controlled by left-wing marxists. I have to admire the dems in a way, they play to win and are very determined to win. They take no prisoners.

Welcome to the United Socialists of America.

I try to keep my head and look at the facts before I panic. I think it might have something to do with Dems showing up to vote and Repubs not being involved. I'm hoping by Nov the Repubs will be motivated to show up.

Keep in mind that Southaven Mississippi is JUST below the Tennessee state line and HIGH numbers of blacks (democrat voters) have moved there to escape the crime in Memphis.

Southaven went heavily for Davis...he is mayor of Southaven for crying out loud. Southaven’s growth is primarily white flight from crime-ridden Memphis (the schools in Memphis our terrible, as well).

“You clearly don’t live in Mississippi.”

I don’t and would never live in Mississippi and I’m not saying he’s a RINO. I’m saying that because the RINO’s have taken over the party, the true conservatives are hurt. They are guilty by association just like Jehoshaphat with Ahab.

“Not only are gas prices 50%-60% higher than they were just a year ago, but grocery and other commodity (goods) prices are now rising at substantial rates. On many products, increases of 20%-30% in the last 6 months are not uncommon.”

Yet the government won’t dare call it inflation because then they’ll have to make cost of living increases for all the entitlements.

Davis is not a rino. These same Mississippians who voted for the Democrat WILL VOTE FOR McCain in the general. I can guarantee you that. You cannot blame the total implosion of the party on the rinos. It starts with Iraq, it ends with the economy...mix in disgruntled base and pow...total collapse.

I didn't say Davis was a RINO - I said that the PARTY AS A WHOLE is perceived as such, because of it's "leadership". I've no doubt that McCain will win Mississippi - but that's in spite of himself, not BECAUSE of it. RINOs are the REASON we're hogtied in Iraq - there are enough "moderate" Republicans who keep beating the defeatism drum and who are able to side with the Dims enough to hobble efforts at shortening the war without leaving in abject surrender. The reason the base is unenthusiastic is because even THEY see the GOP as dominated by the "country club" types who care more about social liberalism, keeping the flow of cheap illegal labour going, and making sure that CEOs have their $10 million bonuses, national security and the prosperity of the nation as a whole be doggered. The base sees our supposedly conservative President presiding over the biggest increase in federal government spending and power in a generation, and they see a supposedly conservative set of GOP congressmen (remember who had control until 2006?) doing diddly squat about it. The base sees our "presumptive nominee" signing onto this global warming nonsense and supporting cap-and-trade, joining with Dimocrats in the "Gang of 14" so as to prevent any more truly conservative justices going to the SCOTUS, opposing free speech with McCain-Feingold, and doing his level best to throw the borders wide open for any two-bit with a rake and a sombrero who wants to cross our border illegally.

Yeah, you're right, the base IS disgruntled - because they perceive REPUBLICANS (not just SOME Republicans) as being RINOs. Factually, it's incorrect, but for a lot of people, the psychological impression is a powerful one.

It’s getting harder for conservatives to crossover and vote for RINO’s.

Yes, I know the gas price is causing other prices to increase. It’s disgusting and no one is turning on the enviro-whackos for this. China is drilling off Cuba. Are we stupid or what?

sorry both the LA and ILL seats have had huge demographic changes in the last 4 years .The LA location had a massive influx of blacks from Katrina and the ILL seat has been going blue due to the urban sprawl from Chicago. The RCC allowed very weak candidates with lots of baggage to run for both these seats. The Miss seat had Dem spreading flyer saying the guy was a racists. Plus the gas prices do not help. It was a vote against Bush and his lack of leadership. McCain is very smart to run against him too.

I don’t understand why people are mad at the economy

Then you don't understand what is about to happen.

You can't fool all of the people all of the time.

“Some guy named Duncan. Don’t know anything about him.”

Neither do I or most on here. When we don’t know the public face of the party we are suppose to support, that party is in huge trouble.

The incompetence of the GOP from the White House to the state levels is mind boggling especially considering the light weights that run the Democrat party.
