Clinton Team Acknowledges $20 Million Debt
Washington Post ^ | May 11, 2008 | Anne E. Kornblut

With her campaign falling ever deeper into debt, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton spent a rainy Mother's Day seeking votes ahead of Tuesday's primary here, turning a deaf ear to calls for her to leave a Democratic presidential contest she has little hope of winning.

Clinton aides continued to insist that she will remain in the race even while confirming that she is $20 million in debt. "The voters are going to decide this," senior adviser Howard Wolfson said on "Fox News Sunday," acknowledging the $20 million figure. "There is no reason for her not to continue this process." Wolfson said he has seen "no evidence of her interest" in pursuing the second-place spot on the Democratic ticket, contrary to rumors that she is staying in the race to leverage a bid for the vice presidential nomination.

With the primary season nearing its close, Sen. Barack Obama's advisers are beginning to consider the question of his running mate with more urgency as they focus more openly on the general election. Although Obama himself has been careful to insist that the Democratic race is not over as long as Clinton stays in it, his advisers have planned a trip to Missouri -- a state that held its primary on Feb. 5 but appears certain to be a key November battleground -- this week.

While not dismissing the states entirely, Obama's campaign is making it clear he will not aggressively contest West Virginia or Kentucky, which holds its primary a week from Tuesday. Obama is likely to win in Oregon, also a May 20 primary state. Clinton has campaigned hard in West Virginia, and her aides said Sunday that she will hold a victory celebration at the Charleston Civic Center on Tuesday night.

That's....that's....so, so, (tearing up)...sniff, sniff, sniff... sad.....

Hey, Hillary. Walmart's got part-time jobs available...

Who do I have to contact at Free Republic to get a spontaneous, grass-roots cash-raising effort going?

Why doesn’t she pay it out of the $109 million they say they made last year? Wanta take any bets that she will walk away from the $20 million and the people will pay?

What does $20 million in debt mean to her? So she stiffs a bunch of people who provided her campaign with goods and services.

Hey, she can’t be responsible for every under-capitalized business in America now, can she?

I would not discount or underestimate the power of the KKKlintoon machine. They are not accostomed to nor do they enjoy losing. Remember how Hellary came up with $5 mil in a flash about a month and 1/2 ago?

...she is $20 million in debt.

Yet, she claims to know how to run our economy.

Also, $20 million should really be no problem for Hillary.

First, borrow 69,877 chinese yuan, ($10,000) and,

Buy cattle futures! (Using the WSJ as an info source, of course.)

And, in no time, viola! With Hillary's futures skill and investing acumen, the profits will be at 20 mil.

This could get interesting.
Does she stiff a bunch of creditors and get bad press?
Does she concede to BO and he retires her debt?

BTW, she paid off Tom Vilsack’s (gov of Iowa) debt when he got out of the race and endorsed her. I think it was over $1M.

Any businessperson dumb enough to extend credit to the Clinton campaign deserves to be stiffed.

There is a silver lining, if she doesn’t usurp the silver to help pay for her debt.

$20 million debt (and probably rising). That could end any possibility of her trying to mount a run in 2012.

She would have to pay off this debt before starting to mount a 2012 campaign, and debtors would be unlikely to donate to a 2012 campaign. So, chances are, she would be unable, financially, to mount a run in 2012.

[This could finally be the end of the Clinton hold on Washington politics. She could return to the Senate to finish her term. She might try to displace Reid as Senate Leader. Chances are, however, that her political career might end, since her last dream (the presidency) eluded her. Settling for Senate Leadership would be just that — settling for. And Senate Leadership would require allot of work on a daily basis. She would be rather tied to the Senate and unable to flit around the nation — and world.]

Don’t worry, old Billy boy will just get back out on the speaking circuit and charge $150k a speech for the next 10 years and they’ll have it made up and then some. Of course, his capital has dipped somewhat, but you know, those Clintons never really go away (wishful thinking/dreaming)....

Maybe the campaign finance laws should require all campaign expenses to be paid in ADVANCE ‘cause otherwise grifters like the Clintonistas can run up big tabs and what mechanism is left to make them pay? Will this campaign debt ever be paid off or will the goods and services end up effectively as gifts from both willing and unwilling vendors, consultants, employees, etc.?

Yes, she wants to get paid off.

“Payment in kind” is the generally accepted term. Who knew there were that many caterers, hotel managers, leasing companies and travel offices that were that strong in their support of Herself, still the Cold and Joyless?

Fortunately, at least PART of the shortfall was covered by borrowings from the candidate’s own personal resources.

You want to know how to become a millionaire while running for high elective office?

Start out a multi-millionaire.

If she has paid her slob advisor, Mark Penn, MILLIONS of DOLLARS, I wonder what she's paying CHELSEA to be away from her job so long???

They have MANY ....MANY more millions off-shore than that 109 MILLION they say they made.
