SAN FRANCISCO, May 10 (UPI) -- San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom is attempting to find a way to close a major stretch of roadway to allow residents to do yoga in a wide open space.

Newsom said by closing a 3 1/2-mile stretch of road, residents would be able to indulge their yoga, bicycling or dancing hobbies in the Bay Bridge's shadow, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Saturday.

"Instead of bringing people to open space," Newsom said, "we bring open space to people."

“The closures would all take place on Sundays in either August or September and would only last for four hours, but nonetheless Newsom said he knows the plan will be controversial.”

Aren’t these called block parties?

If they are turning roads into concrete parks, will they open up the parks for driving shortcuts? Driving across the soccer field and turning at the swing set will cut at least five minutes off the drive.

The Trust Funds must be doing well for so many not to need the roads to get to work.

Better get there early. There will be quite a bit of competition for the few square feet of real estate not occupied by “streetdweller” pee or vomit.

It will be amusing to watch the panhandlers assault a yoga class right in the middle of assuming the “lotus” position.

Article: Yet Newsom feels the temporary road closures would allow San Francisco to join the ranks of Paris or Bogota, Colombia, cities that close off major thoroughfares for humanistic pursuits.

Right. The regular protests aren't enough nor are the street fairs, the street peddlers, the insane who stand on corners screeching their paranoia and hawking their politics. Tai Chi in the parks have been going on in the mornings since the 70s.

Yep, definitely insufficient "humanistic pursuits" happening in SF....

Besides, I think Newsom is being rather unfair -- SF has a huge crime problem - how dare he think these thugs are not pursuing personal "humanistic" endeavors!

Heck, some of us don't even need signs announcing "road closures due "humanistic endeavors" -- we already know which neighborhoods are definitely a bad move to drive thru.

They can assign the cops to patrol there instead of looking for criminals throughout the city.
