China Hit By Earthquake

An earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale has hit China's Sichuan province. The tremor was felt across the entire region - shaking buildings in the capital, Beijing, as well as the Thai capital, Bangkok, and Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. US Geological Survey said the quake struck 57 miles north-west of the city of Chengdu at 2.29pm local time (6.28am GMT).

Some 10 million people live in Chengdu.

I would agree. It also caused church-bells in Boston to ring.

It depends on the size/shape/type of the localized earth mantle or tectonic plate I guess. It would also depend on the type of movement that occurs too, sublimation (I believe to be the term when one plate slips under another) or just a simple slippage along a fult.

This quake and the New Madrid quake are amazing events.

7.8 level earthquakes in Sichuan is superficial fountain earthquake,so the damages are very severe.it happened at
12:28 ,May.12 Beijing time.
