Carl Levin has served in the United States Senate for 30 years and the first Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of his re-election bid suggest he’s likely to keep his job. Levin leads Republican state legislator Jack Hoogendyk by a 54% to 37% margin.

Levin has won each of his last three re-election bids with 58% to 60% of the vote. He has not faced a serious election threat since 1984.

To be honest, I thought that Levin would be leading by a larger margin. Not that I expect him to lose, but he ought to be farther ahead of his little-known opponent than he is. Perhaps Hoogendyk’s very Dutch name is helping him in the western part of the state.

And what else to expect out of an Electorate that reelects the likes of Kwame Kilpatrick, Stabinow, and on and on. This State is completely in the thrall of the old style Dem Machine.

And what has it gotten for the blind, ignorant party line voting? Look at Michigan's standing in any measure of economic and social health for the answer.

This is a generic poll and the automatic anti-Levin vote. Outside of some in the anti-tax base like me, and some people out in the Kalamazoo area, NOBODY knows who Jack Hoogendyk is.

I think Jack has a shot if this can become an ideas race. If this is a generic type of campaign like too many have been in my state lately, this one will be over before you can say Jack Robinson.

Sad to say, Michigan is the United States’ Haiti.
A hopeless case with nothing better in sight.
It sinks further into dispair by the year.

Carl Levin stand on the floor of the United States Senate and lies, over and over again. No one challenges him. Stabenow and many others of our “leaders” do the same thing.

The media, of course, protects them. I feel like I’m living in the USSR.

I’d like to see television advertisements of his recent proposal to increase the federal gasoline tax by 50 cents per gallon to fight global warming!

Well said. I can’t stand the sight of this pompous ass who is always on the wrong side of any issue. He acts like royalty.

A few years ago the Senate Intelligence committee was doing a big investigation of the administration’s handling of prewar intel. Levin was leading the charge of course. It was kind of a big deal — they had finally completed the first phase, had submitted a report, and were fighting with the committee’s Republicans over how the second phase would proceed. But it seems like it kind of fizzled after that. Do you (or anyone) remember if that ever went anywhere? Was the second phase ever completed and were the findings ever made public?

BTW, it would definitely be sweet to see Levin get beat. He’s probably the one most responsible for promoting the Bush Lied nonsense in the Senate.

If my name was Hoogendyk, I’d change my name. But at least his middle name is not Hussein—I assume.

When the Obamamessiah starts to tank later this fall, the down-ticket blood for the Dems is going to be incredible.

Term limits is no guarantee for better members, either. They’d just line up rodent cronies controlled from behind the scenes or more experienced staffers.

Except I don’t think it will have much of a downballot effect. Our party isn’t interested in fighting to win back Congress. We can’t win with the lack of money, lack of motivation, and 2nd or 3rd tier candidates.

“Perhaps Hoogendyk’s very Dutch name is helping him in the western part of the state.”

No, The western part of the state just votes for, and knows, more Republicans.

His name will likely cost him 10 points in Nov. The MRP desperately needs to field some candidates with American sounding names. Dick Posthumus was a good candidate for Gov, but he was up against the novelty of Granholm. The fact that his name means “After Death” didn't help.

Next we run Dick DeVos. Good candidate with a weird name and with a huge negative for running Amway.

I don't know a single person that wouldn't rather smash their thumb with a hammer than see an Amway salesman at their door! I hope he never runs again.

Mike Bishop in 2010?
