'My Daughter Deserved To Die For Falling In Love'
guardian.co.uk ^ | May 11 2008 | Afif Sarhan in Basra and Caroline Davies

Two weeks ago, The Observer revealed how 17-year-old student Rand Abdel-Qader was beaten to death by her father after becoming infatuated with a British soldier in Basra. In this remarkable interview, Abdel-Qader Ali explains why he is unrepentant - and how police backed his actions. Afif Sarhan in Basra and Caroline Davies report

For Abdel-Qader Ali there is only one regret: that he did not kill his daughter at birth. 'If I had realised then what she would become, I would have killed her the instant her mother delivered her,' he said with no trace of remorse.

Two weeks after The Observer revealed the shocking story of Rand Abdel-Qader, 17, murdered because of her infatuation with a British solider in Basra, southern Iraq, her father is defiant. Sitting in the front garden of his well-kept home in the city's Al-Fursi district, he remains a free man, despite having stamped on, suffocated and then stabbed his student daughter to death.

Abdel-Qader, 46, a government employee, was initially arrested but released after two hours. Astonishingly, he said, police congratulated him on what he had done. 'They are men and know what honour is,' he said.

Rand, who was studying English at Basra University, was deemed to have brought shame on her family after becoming infatuated with a British soldier, 22, known only as Paul.

She died a virgin, according to her closest friend Zeinab. Indeed, her 'relationship' with Paul, which began when she worked as a volunteer helping displaced families and he was distributing water, appears to have consisted of snatched conversations over less than four months. But the young, impressionable Rand fell in love with him, confiding her feelings and daydreams to Zeinab, 19.

Religion of Peace alert!

Anyone who has read the Koran knows that there is no sanction for “honor” killings. But those people so enjoy bloodshed and destruction, they don’t care.

See how far they will go, these people who value free health care (UK Socialized Medicine) and all the other leftist gimme crap over freedom and the values of a civilized world? The Brits “on the street” just want what the UK nanny state can put in their outstretched hands. The people we so admired during the Great Wars for fighting back have become gubmint teat suckers.

And hence, tolerate the murder of a throw-away Moose Limb girl so their leftist benefactors remain in power and they can continue to suck at said teat.

He's one of 'em.

I don’t know if he is one of them or not. But he certainly is not an American. And I am not being sardonic here.

"I don’t know if he is one of them or not."

Burden of proof is on the guy descended from, raised by, mentored by and schooled by Muslims, and with whom he continues to associate. He could renounce Islam but has chosen not to do so-- says he is a Christian but, from his denials of knowledge of Rev. Wright's incendiary pulpit statements, clearly wasn't listening too closely.

If he's not a Muslim, he's soft and squishy on Muslims, even radical ones like Ahmadinejad and Hamas, and that might be even more dangerous.

So... can anyone tell me why our brave soldiers are still dying in this land of barbarians?

I agree. The only way a Western military can improve a Muslim country is by removing all the amenities of modern life from 36,000 feet. They want society to return to the seventh century, and we should give it to them good and hard. No electricity, no vehicles, no medicine, no modern agriculture. Medieval squalor for all.

I’m guessing the British soldier heard about this by now and is stunned.

Too bad some soldiers can’t trace Abdel-Qader to his hideout in Jordan and honor kill HIM.

What would they do to a non family member?

Muslims cannot ever have Nukes.

If it means millions or even tens of millions dead in Iran, then so be it.

I can remember from childhood my father's warnings about the actual aims of Islam and I am 48 this year so those that say this is something that has arisen in the last 10 - 20 years are living in denial it goes back to the crusades and beyond.

I've got ten years on you and, as far as politics go, the main thing that I remember growing up here in the States was the cold war and the nuclear threat posed by the Soviet Union. The Cuban missile crisis was big for me because at that time I was living in Miami, ninety miles from Cuba. I remember a teacher telling us that if we didn't have a nuclear war at that time, then we would never have one. A more dangerous scenario was hard to imagine. Little did she know what was coming up the road.

Your father sounds as though he was ahead of his time in his ability to sense an approaching evil which, in the period that he spoke of it, had not yet made it's way into the public consciousness at large. I think that I began thinking about the Islamic threat around the time of the Iranian takeover of the American embassy in Tehran.

considered to be the enemy, the invader and a Christian

It is time for someone to explain why we are there. What happened to this young woman is a crime, but closer examination of the reason(s) given demonstrate this father is a terrorist and an enemy to the free state of Iraq. He considers those who are there dying for his freedom, the enemy. I consider him worthy of the honor of a few rounds from an AK-47 with no questions asked.

I was thinking the same thing. If they can easily kill one of their own children, think how easy it would be for them to kill one of us.
