Fossella’s Foibles Make Seat a Toss-Up
Congressional Quarterly ^ | May 9, 2008 | Marie Horrigan

Posted on 05/09/2008 7:45:05 PM PDT by Clintonfatigued

Two Democrats are seeking the nomination. Stephen A. Harrison held Fossella to the lowest winning percentage of his House career in 2006, despite being outspent 10 to 1. Also running is New York City Council member Domenic M. Recchia Jr.

Recchia is on track to outraise Harrison; as of April 1, the date of the most recent campaign finance report, Recchia reported raising $350,000 while Harrison reported raising $151,000. Fossella reported raising $851,000.

Several Republican names have been floated as possible replacement candidates should Fossella resign or retire, including Staten Island District Attorney Daniel M. Donovan Jr., state Sen. Andrew Lanza and New York City Council members James Oddo and Vincent Ignizio.

Democrats hold a 46 percent to 29 percent registration advantage over Republicans in the district, which covers all of Staten Island and part of southwest Brooklyn. However, the 13th District was the only New York City district to give the majority of the vote (55 percent) to President Bush in 2004.

Obviously, the situation isn’t hopeless. It’s just important that the GOP chooses a popular conservative nominee.

Explain please: Republicans like what?

Not familiar with the local stories, not being sarcastic.

Vito Fossella has been arrested for drunk driving, with blood alcohol at twice the legal limit, and the controversy lead to the revelation that he has fathered an illegitimate child by a mistress (he's been married for 29 years).

I don't think we need that kind, either.

Ain’t it amazing ? If Fossella were a Dem, this would merely be his making his bones. I’m not hopeless about this seat, since at least we have a farm team in the district, but this is a helluva way to exit. I’ve heard Oddo’s name mentioned the most as a successor lately. I was thinking this is probably our premier Italian-American Republican Congressional district in the country.

He couldn’t have been married for 29 years, he was 14 in 1979.

I don’t think Oddo will run. He wants to be Borough President.

Daniel Donovan sounds like he would be the strongest candidate, based on name I.D.

Take a look at other stories on Fosella in the past 72 hours. Essentially he admits to having a 3 year old daughter outside his marriage (which has lasted in excess of 10 years and has several children). That’s enough for me and I suspect it will be enough for even New Yorkers.

Given the NRCC’s money troubles, I hope the new guy has a lot of spare change lying around.

D.A. Dan Donovan easily won re-election last November. I know him. He’s a good Repub guy and honest. He would be the strongest candidate. Stephen A. Harrison is a far Left loon who favors the Obama agenda. It would not be good if he wins the seat.

Isn’t Borough President a nearly powerless job?

It is possible for Vito to hold on. With barack mcgovern on top and lefty harrison just below versus McCain and Vito, anyone would like Vito's chances. That is why his seat has fallen only to “toss up” which about what it usually is at this point in a cycle. In ordinary circumstances the McCain Fossella ticket on Staten Island would get 70&.
This time McCain will get his 70% and Vito could fall to 52% but I doubt it. If there is nothing else that comes out there is enough time to repair a large part of this. Vito is a conservative vote in Congress and we need him. Let's see if harrison and the rat fall for their own bull shiite and actually bring barack mcgovern out here to campaign with lefty harrison.

No politician is perfect. All politicians sell their souls to get elected. Some politicians sell their souls as well as sell out their country. Fossella gave into his baser instincts of sex and booze. Most of the time he voted the right way. It is a shame that he chose sex and booze over fidelity and sobriety. That doesn’t change the fact that he was good for Staten Island. The New York Daily News editorial board and the Staten Island Advance editorial board are screaming that he resign don’t like his policies. These are the same people who gave Clinton a pass. Well tough ta-tas. Most Staten Islanders do like his policies. What we don’t like is drunk drivers and cheaters. If he decides to run for re-election, let his constituents decide.

Dan Donovan is a great DA unlike is predecessor Bill Murphy who counseld Bill Clinton on Grand Jury matters. Ha! I wonder is Murphy told Clinton it was okay to lie to the Grand Jury in the Lewinsky matter.

If Fossella were a Dem, this would merely be making his bones.

Maybe. But it would be far more likely that the MSM would never have forced a Dem to expose the ugly truth.

There are at least two former Democrat ex-congresscritters (one who was in the Senate and one in the House), both well known names (one especially so) who had lengthy political careers and who are both still politically active behind the scenes. Both fathered "love children" many years ago, and the MSM has covered up for both to this day.

The Editorial in the New York Times today cuts Fossella more slack than both the “hometown” paper and the New York Daily News. In fact, the New York Daily News is giving Fossella more print than they gave Spitzer! It’s going to back fire big time. A lot of Staten Islanders are more conservative than the SI Advance and the New York Daily News like.
