LAKE ARROWHEAD, Calif. A coyote grabbed a 2-year-old girl by the head and tried to drag her from the front yard of her mountain home in the third incident of a coyote threatening a small child in Southern California in five days, authorities said.
The coyote attacked the girl around noon Tuesday when her mother, Melissa Rowley, went inside the home for a moment to put away a camera, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said in an incident report.
Rowley came out of the house and saw the coyote dragging her daughter towards a street. She ran towards her daughter, and the animal released the girl and ran away, said sheriff's spokeswoman Arden Wiltshire.

but I have dispatched many with an old 45-70
big and slow - a good philosophy sometimes.
“A dingo ate my baby!”
oops, wrong continent.
“A coyote ate my baby!”
Had two chase my bull mastiff. She went running round a corner and came back with two coyotes hot on her heels. They looked up at me and high tailed it. They didn’t look scared though, it was all business. They thought they saw a cheap meal and when they saw me they concluded that the price was out of their range and they moved along. I was very impressed.
I want to make a “Coyote bait” stamp and stamp all the old “missing cat/dog” signs around here. There is a good reason why fluffy didn’t come home, probably a couple good reasons.
Courtesy ping to my favorite Coyote.
“Crim I won’t post to you again on this since you consider it arguing.”
Nah..you are quite welcome to post to me any time you wish...
” My point was that under normal circumstances this mother may have not considered her child in danger and that we should not be judging her.”
My point is that that is the very attitude that allowed a two year old to be attacked by a coyote.
There ARE no normal circumstances....only lucky breaks that an abductor wasnt watching at the time...
“I can turn my back and set a camera in the house in seconds...probably faster than someone outside looking away to unroll a garden hose to water the lawn could.”
Yes..that’s what the mother thought as well.....she was wrong....
Her two year old paid a terrible price for it...she could have been killed...
We had a fox that liked to “play” with our dog....but never thought of it as trying to lure her out of the yard. The fox was persistent, however.
Huh? Are they protected in California? Here's the 'rules' for coyote hunting in Pennsylvania.
COYOTES: No closed season. Unlimited. Outside of any deer or bear season, coyotes may be taken with a hunting license or a furtaker license, and without wearing orange. During any archery deer season, coyotes may be taken while lawfully hunting deer or with a furtaker license. During the regular firearms deer and any bear seasons, coyotes may be taken while lawfully hunting deer or bear, or with a furtaker license while wearing 250 square inches of fluorescent orange. During the spring gobbler season, may be taken by those with a valid tag and meet fluorescent orange and shot size requirements.
You dumb-sh*t California knockers are too dumb to know that the majority of the "fruits and nuts" you talk about aren't from California, they just moved here -- from places like Georgia! And New York, and Wisconsin, and Chicago, etc. etc. I KNOW this because I am a fifth-generation Californian. Do you think Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein are from California? HELL NO! They moved here. D*ckhead.
And judging by this post, Georgia is the home of liars and fools.
Good post! Coyotes are a LOT different than typical dogs. They’re smart and admirable! Total survivors. That’s why they should be shot at on sight by humans. Put the fear of man in them.
ATTA BOY, Dan!!! Clee one needs to get a CLUE.
Most if not all of these types of attacks take place in spaces that are very close to the foothills or wildlands. That’s why these parents should know that they are at a high risk of such incidents.
Here's another problem.
When my kids were three or four they wanted to know about Santa Claus. Was he real. We explained that Santa was a nice custom that had developed over the years, but that he was actually a nice man dressed in a Santa suit.
When our kids reached seven or eight, they complained because we made them think Santa was real when he wasn't.
What you say and what they perceive or remember are two different things.
When it's a life and death or serious injury issue, I would recommend against letting them make choices.
I come from a long line of ranch/farm women who raised lots of kids in rural areas. There is NO WAY IN HELL that they managed to do so by adhering to your unrealistic expectations of not only keeping an eye on the kids every second, but of remaning within grabbing distance (which is exactly what it would take when you're talking about ultra-smart critters that lie in ambush) of the child at all times. My mother raised FOUR boys on a ranch, and they were all toddlers at the same time, and there were lots of coyotes around, not to mention lots of deer and mountain lion or two, wild pigs, rattle snakes, etc. Mothers throughout history have had such challenges in protecting their kids. The reason my brothers didn't get snatched up as toddlers by coyotes or the moutain lion is because ANYONE on the ranch who caught sight of either animal SHOT AT IT PRONTO. Shot to kill, and the animal knew it, so it kept its distance. In urban and semi-urban areas, to discharge a firearm is asking for trouble and most peopel don't learn how to shoot at a young age anyway. My mother and every ranch woman I know, learned how to shoot young and how to shoot well. Coyote attacks on toddlers were unheard of.
Really, you are very much misguided in attributing this to lack of parental watchfulness. The fault lies with the coyotes and the lack of either the will or ability of homeonwers to discharge a firearm in the coyotes' direction to make them have a healthy FEAR of man.
To keep coyotes out, you’d have to have SOME kind of fenced yard. I’ve read that coyotes, which plan and scheme and strategize for weeks, can breach fences that most humans would assume were completely coyote proof. The fences on the ranches where women kept their toddlers “safe” while carrying on their busy workdays were high enough to keep the kids in and did the trick because predators like coyotes and big cats, which could easily navigate a four-foot picket fence, were SHOT AT ON SIGHT always and kept their distance well from the main house during the day. Fences sound nice ... but won’t do the trick unless you make them eight feet tall. SHOOTING TO KILL the predatory animals will do the trick.
Those two kids you mentioned, I don’t think their moms acted appropriately. I doubt you do either.
There is some truth in what you say about child-proofing. There is only so much you can do. Still, you don’t leave caustics or other dangerous items under the sink. You don’t leave knives down low. You take reasonable measures to reduce as much as possible, the danger they are exposed to.
Kids will be kids. That’s true.
Amen!
As far as santa claus. My mom thought it was child abuse and my neighbors hated me but my kids were taught from the beginning that it was a fun fairy tale.
Bounty and kill all the coyotte.
It’s “for the children” should be the answer to the Greenies.
