As the fate of a nailbiter Indiana primary -- and possibly the course of the Democratic race -- hung on his city, Gary Mayor Rudy Clay said just now that it might take a while yet to finish counting the vote in Lake County, which includes Gary, and said that his city had turned out so overwhelmingly for Barack Obama that it might just be enough to close the gap with Hillary Rodham Clinton.
"Let me tell you, when all the votes are counted, when Gary comes in, I think you're looking at something for the word to see," Clay, an Obama supporter, said in a telephone interview from Obama's Gary headquarters. "I don't know what the numbers are yet, but Gary has absolutely produced in large numbers for Obama here."
Clay said the results were late coming in from Lake County because of the large numbers of absentee ballots that had to be counted -- about 11,000. Under local practice, all of the cartridges from voting machines in Gary and nearby East Chicago are first collected at the local airport before being driven to the county headquarters to be tallied with the results from the rest of the county, he said. He said there were major technical problems holding up the count.
"It takes a little time. We want to be sure that every vote is counted fair and right," he said. "I just talked to the director out there and they are working like junkyard dogs to get that done as soon as possible. They are taking some time but I told them to do it right. That's what taking the time."

Nah - if Obama pulls this one off, furious Clinton voters will be crawling over broken glass to vote for McCain.
Why would this be fraud? People in Lake County believe in Oprah’s Obama all the way to the government bank, and they will be awaiting their checks.
WI is a blue state, IN isn’t. Besides, everybody will know he cheated this time.
“We want to be sure that every vote is counted fair and right” — somehow those words out of the Mayor of Gary,IN, make the hair on the back of my neck stand up. When a Dem says fair and right for votes, I always suspect voter fraud. Since it is Gary IN, I suspect it even more.
If Obama was smart, he’d contact Lake County officials and tell them to have an honest count. If there’s any fraud, he’s screwed.
I think that's what happened in Miami in 2000. The election officials in Miami just underestimated how many votes it would take for Gore to win.
I didn't say which Democrat it would be.
Gotta match that stack of absentee ballots with the voter sign-in sheets. Wouldn’t want any embarrassing coinkydinks now, would we?
Well said, except, he or his camp might be caught if someone starts looking.
They probably didn’t plan on Buchanon doing so well either. :^)
In 2004 in Anderson a huge number of absentee ballots were cast using an address where an elderly widow lived alone. It was quite a scandal.
CNN just said they’re still considering IN “too close to call” with 88% of the votes in — which means they do think Obama’s people might still “find” enough votes in Lake County to make up a margin of 40,000 votes behind right now.
Yippee, it would be great to see the Clintonistas have reason to go into a meltdown over vote fraud since it will be so unmistakably DEMOCRAT vote fraud (as it almost always is).
As for Hillary, she had to win big in IN and win little in NC to have any credible case that she is more electable than Obambi, so this is actually a BAD night for her!
LAKE COUNTY COMING IN AT 75-25 FOR OBAMA!!!!!!!!
IF THAT HOLDS HE COULD WIN INDIANA!!!!!
LOL!
Lake County just dumped 28% at ONCE...
25% Hitlery, 75% Obamamessiah...
I suspect Wisconsin is a “blue” state compared to Indiana mainly because its population is dominated by the one large urban area (Milwaukee) and a major leftist university town (Madison). Indiana is more of a Rust Belt state — but with enough of a pro-business environment that it doesn’t have the same tired socio-economic climate as its neighbors.
It’s now down to 20,000.
MARGIN NOW SAID TO BE ONLY 20,000 VOTES WITH 25% OF LAKE COUNTY VOTE IN
20,000 vote gap
