The official discussion thread for North Carolina's big day - the first time in twenty years NC has mattered in a Presidential primary. Also, several other hotly contested primary races, determining who will face off in November to replace term limited Governor Mike Easley; and some very interesting Congressional races, among them the three-way 11th district race that includes Free Republic's own John Armor.
Races are held under run-off rules; if the top vote-getter doesn't reach 40%, the top two vote-getters will face off in June.
North Carolinians, let us know what you see/hear at the polls today.

You have another FReepamil from me
And so everyone knows - posting them on the threads is a bannable offense, as I understand it
I have replied. Thank you again.
Anyone know why you can’t write in a candidate in the primary?

Maybe it’s because, in local races, write-in voting could produce runoff elections with 5 or 6 candidates, making it difficult ever to reach a resolution.
My teens are back from the poll. Turnout is still pretty high. We’ve got a town alcohol sale referendum on the ballot, which is probably bring out more voters than usual.
I wanted to write Ronald Reagan in as a protest vote, but no preference was as close as I could come. If I write him in in Nov that is almost a vote for the Dem. When I asked the poll workers why I couldn’t cast a write in vote none of them knew. They called a regional supervisor for me, but she didn’t know either. I am waiting for Dickerson of the election board to return my call. I won’t hold my breath.
It’s an interesting question. I doubt you’ll hear back any time soon, though.
Once this primary is settled, I need to call the election board, or maybe the city manager, and find out if my kids can run a refreshment stand during the voting in November! I expect the election board to say “as long as it’s outside the red line,” but the city or the school administration might have other ideas.
Very interesting. I don’t get up that way too often - lot of Democrats in your area?
Great, now I’m starving.
Was anybody around for the ‘76 primary? Here it was a heck of a good time...
Right,”give Hill a big win in North Carolina”
And then in January, with big majorities in the House and Senate,we can have some super duper socialism!
Oops, sorry,is this FR?I thought for a minute I had been steered to DU.
Poirier and Tyson have ‘solid’ answers—hope they WIN!!!

Smith appears to be a decent candidate however the answer on question 11—lack of real ($) support for private schools—is a real turn off. The public school system is tyranny. The lack of support for private school vouchers may be more of political calculation then personal philosophy—still it is a turn off. I'm not convinced he has the TV charisma required to beat Purdue.

Pat McCrory’s answer on 4 is a turn off, not teaching values is a value system in and of itself—relativism.
Graham seems to have the best answers, but is down in the polls.

ANYONE OF THEM much better then the corrupt ‘RATS in there currently.
Richard Morgan has by far the best answers for N.C. SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION.

SUPERIOR COURT 22B CANDIDATE RESPONSES
Benjamin G. Philpott vague, but Roberts is decent answer.

Theodore S. Royster has ‘solid’ answers

I'm in NC-4, a heavily gerrymandered RAT district. I think BJ Lawson who has libertarian leanings has the best chance to beat the RAT David Price who makes me nearly vomit every time I get one of his mailings.

Although I am more conservative then libertarian, I am sympathetic to libertarian positions.
What's that smell? ZOT!
Dole wins the handwriting award with solid answers...
No problem. He'll still claim you did. Welcome to FR.
