PHOENIX (AP) - Republican presidential hopeful John McCain says the focus on illegal immigration during the Republican primary season harmed his party's image among Hispanics.
Speaking to reporters in Phoenix on Cinco de Mayo, McCain said that Hispanic citizens want America's borders secured and illegal immigrants to be treated humanely.
He says low-income Hispanic citizens are vulnerable to losing their jobs to the lower wages accepted by illegal immigrants.
On the subject of broader immigration policies, McCain says local governments would not have to take on immigration problems had the federal government overhauled the country's immigration policies.
McCain spoke at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport before his flight to North Carolina.

Do YOU have a plan? I assume it’s to build a big wall. And then what? Are you willing to shoot people that cross it? Have to make that decision going in...or you’ve wasted time and money on the wall. If they get tangled in the barb wire...will you have them rescued or shall we just show the corpses on the evening news to teach others a lesson? (That would include women and children.) Can YOU define define EXACTLY how agressive you’d like to be....simplify this since (oh great an knowledgeable one) since all of America can’t. Show we Boarder States the way.
Do YOU understand that McCains just one person....one who’s spent most of his life dealing with this issue here in AZ. With his support we’ve passed the 1st law requiring SS verification.
What have you helped to pass in your state?

Probably not. There were a few years when conservatives were ascendant but the GOP is and always has been a coalition.
Even when the GOP controlled the Senate, it did not have enough Conservative clout to push the agenda through. Bill Frist was roundly cindemned but the trut is he did not have enough conservative votes.

It's all in knowing the code words:
"Humanely" means free pass, front of the line, hard workers, better life, amnesty...and "secured borders" means 'as much of a fence as we're forced into' [plus negotiated rules of access and probably acceptance of consular ID for any purpose]
At this point McCain is in the same boat as Obama - if you refuse to clearly and irrefutably repudiate the albatross hanging 'round your neck, you'd best learn to live with it.

But that abortion-worshipping adulterer Giuliani-—hiding tax dollars to support his whore third wife——was such a tempting target.
Plus the depravity of Giuliani’s handlers became evident when they dropped the losing hunchbacked lisper and sank their fangs into McCain.

Slumlords prefer them for the same reason. They don't complain, won't report them, will put up with dwellings that would be deemed uninhabitable if inspected, etc. There have been cases where the landlords rip them off when they vacate (keeping their security deposits) thinking they could get away with it. At least one prominent Californian was sued for doing this to thousands of immigrants.
I don't condone people coming here illegally, but I do feel sorry for the ones that end up being nothing more than slaves. EXISTING laws need to be enforced! Start with employers and landlords and you will have solved at least half the problem--no place to live or work and they will leave.

I will close ranks behind a six pack of cold beer and a bag of pop-corn on election night. I will go to bed with a clear concientious and thank myself for not voting for McCain. I will hope that the GOP leadership will learn something from their mistake. We are a tough people and we will survive four years of the Democrats. I will not vote McCain in for a black eye to the GOP.

So aren't we supposed to enforce the immigration laws so Americans of Hispanic ancestry don't lose their jobs to lowered paid illegal aliens?

Absolutely. The open border crowd sure doesn’t. They see them as a commodity for trade while they call US racist! Any human deserves a good wage for a good day’s work. They should all go home a demand it.
