Rapid City mayor Alan Hanks is telling residents to stay home and be safe today, and authorities in the Northern Hills and Rapid City closed off traffic completely except for emergencies. Please, stay off the roads until the weather clears. The wind is still gusting to 50 mph with heavy snow, he said. There are very few businesses that are going to open, so take a day off and enjoy it.
Meanwhile, police said they would cite any motorists who got stuck in the numerous drifts citywide and were traveling on any non-essential business.
Wind gusts in Rapid City were clocked in excess of 65 mph and are expected to continue at least through the morning and likely into the afternoon.
Some city snowplows were already on the roads. The plan is to clear main arteries, major intersections, emergency routes and other hazardous areas.
We will be working on Rushmore Road, Omaha and Fifth St., Hanks said.
Private snow removal contractors out in the snow said the high winds and heavy snow made removal efforts near futile.

Yet another “winter that never ends” ping.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
I-70 was shut down west of Denver this past week.
This global warming is bad.....very bad. /s
-—arrived in Deadwood, SD Thursday noon, was the most snowed in I’ve ever been til 5 pm yesterday-—melting out now.
That's climate change for ya. :-)
This just in, Al Gore has changed “Global Warming” to “Climate Change”
I once voiced my opinion one cold winter day in Boston about Global Warming nonsense. I was blasted as a denier. I have the feeling that Global Warming advocates will never recant. They need to be reeducated.
Global Warming is a cult religion and there can be no contradiction to the dogma of St. Algore. The Global Warming Inquisition is here to enforce orthodoxy and persecute those who would deny the dogma until they recant their heresy.
I guess in that sense I’m a heretic.
What I wouldn’t give for the Democrat Convention in August to be shut down by a blizzard.
I hope Gore suffocates on his own vomit shortly the courts award $100M against him in a class action suit for terrorism.
It was a fierce, but short-lived, blizzard. We finally got our road plowed open this morning. Had six-foot drifts all around us, briefly lost power. Now the sun is shining and the snow is melting like crazy. Hope to golf tomorrow.
Such is the weather in the Black Hills. Always changing. That’s why I love it here. Now, the blizzard of ‘49 was a different story.
That “spring blizzard” you posted about happened in a place where the Aurora Borealis is often seen. ;-)
Oh, look! A “blizzard” at the North Pole, folks! We surely have an ice age on the way!
[I just call them “storms.”]
I agree. With global warming, life is good. :-)
