Rep. Kevin McCarthy, 43, a prolife freshman Republican from California, will chair the platform committee for the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn., The Washington Times has learned today.
Steven J. Duffield, former aide to conservative Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona, will be the committee's executive director.
In his first year in Congress, Mr. McCarthy had a 100 percent prolife voting record, according to the National Right to Life committee.
Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, has let it been known through associates that he will not work to "soften" even behind the scenes the party's platform, which supports a constitutional ban on abortion....
Mr. Duffield, who helped pushed through the Senate confirmation of conservative Supreme Court appointments Chief Justice John Roberts and Associate Justice Samuel Alito, opposes civil unions and same-sex marriage.
Mr. McCain associates told The Washington Times earlier this year that his operatives are not going to work behind the scenes to eliminate the party's calls for constitutional bans on abortion and homosexual marriage when the platform committee meets during the week before the Sept. 1-4 GOP convention....
Previous GOP standard bearers such as former Kansas Sen. Bob Dole have sought to alter the platform's planks, which are honed and released in the platform immediately before the nominating convention.

Agreed.
Still, its a bit of an insidious headline.
H
Accidental, I am sure, just like the word “operatives.”
Amnesty John Kyl?
Try harder. McCarthy was one of the girly men who helped the Austrian team with the Democrats in the California Assembly to disenfranchise the elected Republicans.
Kevin McCarthy signals nothing guaranteed about conservatism. He signals the assention of the Renaissance man* in the Republican Party.
* willing to do the business of moderates and liberals as long as the act is self promotional.
There are issues and there are issues. The babies are a LOT more important than you apparently imagine.
My recollection, is that Dole said it didn't matter since he never read it.
McCarthy conservative? You're kiddin', right?
Say goodbye to the prolife plank if Kevin has any say. I have known Kevin personally for 20 years. He is a RINO pro-abort period. He was always proabortion like his mentor Bill Thomas. Then he pretended to be prolife when he ran for Assembly in 2002, and then once he was elected he reverted back to his proabortion stance.
And watch the plank on Immigration, too. It will be an abject JOKE.

Let's see what the platform has to say about amnesty, global warming, drilling in ANWAR, and closing Gitmo. From the 2004 Rep platform:
Border Security
Our nation has been enriched by immigrants seeking a better life. In many cases, immigrants of the past fled violence and oppression searching for peace and freedom. All suffered and sacrificed but hoped for a better future for their children in America. Our nation has been enriched by their determination, energy, and diversity.
Ensuring the integrity of our borders is vital to ensuring the safety of our citizens. We must know the identity of all visitors who enter the United States, and we must knowwhen they leave. The US-VISIT system, which uses biometric data to better track theentry and exit of foreign travelers, has been implemented at more than 115 airports and ispresently being implemented at land border crossings. Reconnaissance cameras, borderpatrol agents, and unmanned aerial flights have all been increased at our borders. We must strengthen our Border Patrol to stop illegal crossings, and we will equipthe Border Patrol with the tools, technologies, structures, and sufficient force necessary tosecure the border.
We will seek stiff penalties for those who smuggle illegal aliens intothe country and for those who sell fraudulent documents. We urge continued support forstate, local, and federal law enforcement to work in a cohesive manner in securing ourborders to prevent illegal entry.
Global Climate Change
Republicans are committed to meeting the challenge of long-term global climate change by relying on markets and new technologies to improve energy efficiency. These efforts will help reduce emissions over time while allowing the economy to grow. Our President and our Party strongly oppose the Kyoto Protocol and similar mandatory carbon emissions controls that harm economic growth and destroy American jobs.
Supporting Humane and Legal Immigration
The Republican Party supports reforming the immigration system to ensure that it is legal, safe, orderly and humane. It also supports measures to ensure that the immigration system is structured to address the needs of national security. America is a stronger and better nation because of the hard work and entrepreneurial spirit of immigrants, and the Republican Party honors them. A growing economy requires a growing number of workers, and President Bush has proposed a new temporary worker program that applies when no Americans can be found to fill the jobs. This new program would allow workers who currently hold jobs to come out of the shadows and to participate legally in Americas economy. It would allow men and women who enter the program to apply for citizenship in the same manner as those who apply from outside the United States. There must be strong workplace enforcement with tough penalties against employees and employers who violate immigration laws. We oppose amnesty because it would have the effect of encouraging illegal immigration and would give an unfair advantage to those who have broken our laws.
To better ensure that immigrants enter the United States only through legal means that allow for verification of their identity, reconnaissance cameras, border patrol agents, and unmanned aerial flights have all been increased at the border. In addition, Border Patrol agents now have sweeping new powers to deport illegal aliens without having first to go through the cumbersome process of allowing the illegal alien to have a hearing before an immigration judge. We support these efforts to enforce the law while welcoming immigrants who enter America through legal avenues
If you think that there is any better alternative in this year's election, then you have parted company with reality and there would be no reason to review your other posts.
We have Scalia, Thomas, Roberts and Alito. Stevens is pushing 90 with one foot in the grave and another on a banana peel. Ruth Buzzi Ginsberg is not thought to be in good health. Sandra Day O'Kennedy will probably flip when the pro-life majority is established. I am not interested in perfection under the circumstances. Next we overturn Roe and neither Her Satanic Thighness nor Hussein will advance that agenda. Voting for third party moonbats is nothing more than an exercise in self-worship and obsessively self-centered uberfussiness by those who vote that way.
Your observation IS a major concern. Do you think that McCarthy will try to push his minimal weight around to remove the pro-life plank?
Not by himself, but he can do things with the committee rules, membership, procedures and such to give their side an edge. These people are very sharp on strategy and parliamentary procedure (though not as smart as might wife who used to run circles around them). In fact Kevin himself can purport to be opposed to the anti-life efforts, but only the insiders will be able to see how he will assist them with every move.
Like I said I've been crossing swords with Kevin going back to the Young Republicans and College Republicans in the 1980s. Outside his own county he loses more than he wins, but he and his ilk keep coming back. Prolifers need to know that they CANNOT drop their guard when Kevin is calling the shots.
I guess he’ll be pushing hard to have the party repudiate man being a major contributor in causing the dreaded ‘global warming’, and pushing to have a platform plank added as such.. I won’t mention pushing to drill offshore and anwr for oil.. ;-) t’wouldn’t be prudent, yaknow..

...”I urge my friends who complain about the influence of the religious Right, get out there and get busy. That’s what they do! Now, if we believe in the Republican party of Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt, the big-tent party, then we have to get out there and show that. The fact is, some of us have sat idly by while those very active people have basically set the agenda for our party. I get attacked every day because I’m working with Ted Kennedy. How can I work with Kennedy? Because I want to get something done!” ...
