Good point. I’d certainly prefer that cheap trick to her playing gynopolitics.

I wonder how the reconstructed dems liked serving with black senators.

If Brooke had not had such a messy divorce going in 1978, he could have defeated Paul Tsongas and survived into the Reagan era when Republicans controlled the Senate.

By now he must realize how foolish and evil his relationship with Walters was.

“I’m sorry, what a low-life, trailer-trash thing to reveal at an interview.”

Absolutely. These days many famous people have little or no class.

Probably not very thrilled. In the case of Blanche Bruce, who was the only one to serve a full 6-year term before Brooke, he had a real problem. The Democrats effectively “redeemed” Mississippi less then 2 years into his term and elected the famed Lucius Q.C. Lamar to the junior seat. I read somewhere that supposedly Lamar got on as well as could be expected with Bruce, and had some sympathy for him because Bruce was literally unable to return to MS at that point on (since to do so could place him in jeopardy for his life). At the expiration of his term in 1881, he remained in DC for the rest of his life.

Brooke still might’ve been defeated in 1978, divorce or not. The GOP base was starting to get tired of supporting its prominent far-left members (we complain about folks that get 75% or less ratings from the ACU, but we had members that were in the Lincoln Chafee near-single digit category, voting wrong more than 85% of the time). Brooke’s voting record was almost indistinguishable from his seatmate Ted Kennedy’s (his lifetime ACU rating was just below an “8”), pretty awful. He would’ve been well out of step in the Reagan Revolution unless he “got with the program.”

I liked The Onion's take on this:

"I guess we can talk about it now that they're both pretty much dead."

Ed Brooke was the last senator with any class to represent the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Yeah, I know he was waaaaaay too liberal (considering his constituency, what else would get him elected?) But just the fact that Hillary Clinton hated him from her college days makes him a classy guy.

I'm old enough to remember when Barbara Walters first went on national TV. Even though I was still in junior high school, I thought she got selected for her boobs rather than her brains. Her actions since, including this, only confirms what I thought back then.
