Polling stations are now closing... Based on a wide range of conversations we've had throughout the day with people in the field and with senior Tory and other insiders we are very confident that on the basis of patterns of turnout, postal votes and canvass returns Boris Johnson has been elected Mayor of London.

This is speculation. There does seem to be a strong conservative trend in other local races in England which lends credence to this. We won't know for sure until tomorrow morning.

A BTT. I’ll be watching this one. It would break my heart to see Red Ken taken off in shackles to a North Korean political prison...

First Sarko in France, now England turning right - all those Euro folks that hate President Bush sure are voting for his way of thinking it appears.

People can only take so much of being told that they are worthless, and they must enslave themselves.

I’m amused that you think Londoners have President Bush on their minds when they are choosing a new mayor. I don’t think they really care what any prospective mayoral candidate thinks about America, Bush or the ‘war on terror’, they care more about what they can offer London, or rather in the case of Boris, he can’t be worse Ken ‘you’re like a concentration camp guard’ Livingstone....

From what little I know of Johnson he sounds like a reformed rake and a potential future PM.

Will there be a parade of the Livery Companies and a banquet at Mansion House? Oh, that’s right, they did away with all that stuff.

I pray this is true. Someone needs to clean up London and throw out all the bloody terrorists.

Well, you can call me Lord Mayor
or you can call me Boris.
But you doesn't have to call me Johnson.

IIRC the Lord Mayor of London is not the same office as the Mayor of London.

It’s my understanding that Boris isn’t especially conservative, he’s just less looney than Livingstone. Is that about right?

Good news. I have good friends who live in London, their infant son is named Boris (after Mr. Johnson, too!) Boris is quite the character.
